As we know Bruce can stir up so many different emotions, A friend asked me to make him a tape of only 'happy songs', So I've found myself starting to classify the music depending on the mood. For instance, what song would perfectly fit the description of--

1. A Sad Song
2. An Angry Song
3. A Friendship Song
4. A Romantic Love Song
5. A Desperate Song

I'll use answers to #3 and #4 for the 'Happy' songs, thank you : )

Karen, great topic!
1. Sad: "Backstreets" or "Wreck on the Highway"
2. Angry: "Born in the USA" (accoustic) or "Adam Raised A Cain"
3. Friendship: "Bobby Jean" and "No Surrender"
4. Romance: "Tougher Than The Rest", "Book of Dreams"
5. Desperation: "Drive All Night" (ladies, how could you not think of this one?) or "Born to Run"

How about a category for "Walk Like a Man" and "Living Proof"? I don't know what to call it but they are in a class of their own...maybe "Family"? (we'd have to include "Independence Day")

Wow, what a great category!

I think I went a little overboard, but here's a list I put together (thinking of you trying to make that tape, you would need more than three or four songs). I looked at the categories as two groups: Friendship and Romantic were somewhat interchangeable, as they could both be on your tape; and the others were generally interchangable, as they wouldn't be on the tape. Anyway, here goes:

Sad Song: Shut Out The Light (somehwat Desperate), Independence Day, Wreck On The Highway, Loose Ends, Back In Your Arms, Gave It A Name, Dry Lightning, One Step Up, Brilliant Disguise, My Father's House.

Angry Song: Roulette,Youngstown (especially the live version), Seeds, War, BITUSA, Streets Of Fire, I'm Going Down

Friendship Song: Blood Brothers, Spirit In The Night, Brothers Under The Bridges 83, Bobby Jean, Out On The Street, I'm A Rocker, Darlington County, Glory Days

Romantic Song: Rendevous, Give The Girl A Kiss, I Wanna Marry You (almost Desperate), Living Proof, My Beautiful Reward, My Love Will Not Let You Down, Ramrod, Better Days, Crush On You, The Fever, Be True, Sherry Darling, Two Hearts, If I Should Fall Behind, The Wish, and what Bruce introduced as "The greatest love song I ever wrote" -- Rosalita

Desperate Song: Straight Time, The New Timer, Two Faces, Downbound Train, Nebraska, State Trooper, Stolen Car, Johnny 99, Point Blank, The River, Racing In The Street (starts as Friendship), Factory, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, The Promise, Iceman, Wages Of Sin

I think my two saddest songs would be--
Highway Patrolman
I Wish I Were Blind (although a love song)

To my happy list I've added--
The Wish

To my angry list I've added--
Badlands (I wanna spit in the face...)

To my desperate list I've added--
Streets of Philadelphia

I liked the idea of the other catagories--

Hope and Dreams--Reason to Believe

Family--Spare Parts

Great post Karen. Difficult because some songs fit more than one category, but I'll do my best.

Sad song-Back In Your Arms...truly sad to hear someone lamenting what they threw away and what they'd give to have it back.

Angry song-Badlands..."honey I want the heart, I want the soul, I want control right now!!"

Friendship song-Bobby Jean...a popular choice for this topic I'm sure, but it is also kinda sad. This song reminds me of my sister. She's the one who first got me into Bruce. She always stuck up for me when everyone else was against me. She knows my emotional side so well. I wish we still lived close together. She's the best.

Romantic love song-Drive All Night...through the wind, through the rain, through the snow, through the rain.....baby I'd drive all night....that just about says it all.

Desperate song-Born in The U.S.A...."they're still there, he's all gone now"..."ten years burnin' down the road, nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go"...I know alot of people see this song as a symbol of Bruce's turn towards commercialism, but when I hear it, I see the faces of our Vietnam Vets, who got sent to a place they didn't want to go, saw some horrific shit over there, and when they came back nobody wanted anything to do with them. How horrible to have no place that feels like home anymore. Bruce's version of this song on the TOL tour gave it a more deserate quality, I feel, and is my fav version, even over the acoustic one on this tour.

Sex - Drive All Night

I can't resist now either, Karen. :)

Sad-- The River, The Promise, Brilliant Disguise (god have mercy on the man...)

Angry-- Adam Raised a Cain, Youngstown, BtiUSA (A sellout song my ASS-- you don't write shit like that to win popularity contest, esp if you are writing it in 1984)

Friendship-- hands down, it's all about Miami Steve, um, I mean Bobby Jean :)

Romantic-- Drive All Night, Born to Run, Better Days

Desperate-- Born to Run, Badlands (there's a hope in this one that takes it out of anger for me and into a mix of desperation and hope that is Bruce as his kick ass best!!), and though it SOUNDS bouncy, Hungry Heart and even Dancing in the Dark could fit here (there's something happening somewhere-- it will always maintain that if this song is fluff, it's character driven fluff :))

Party-- Double Shot, Sherry Darling (gotta choose that one)

Sex-- Fire, I'm On Fire, The Fever (I am done for if I ever hear him sing that live), and of course, RHW ;)

I'd like add:

Faith-- Living Proof, Cautious Man, maybe Reason to Believe?

Hope-- Thunder Road (and it's even a tough, wild, desperate hope which is what make this such an a-freakin-mazing work of rock art)

Sherry Darling, thanks for adding two more:

Faith - How about "My Beautiful Reward"(is it about Love or Heaven, or both?) or "Leap of Faith" (taking those risks in love and in life)

Hope - "The Promised Land" or "Should I Fall Behind"

Sexy songs: I'm on Fire (especially the version from Roses and Broken Hearts, for some reason) and the Fever (I'm right there with ya on this one, Sherry Darling... I don't think I would survive hearing this song live... or perhaps the men around me wouldn't survive...haha)

Party songs: Give the Girl a Kiss, Sherry Darling (both are great boppy songs, that are lots of fun and great to dance to)

Hopeful Songs: There are so many, but I've always thought that Frankie and Thunder Road were both particularly hopeful.

LOL, Rosie. By the time that song is thru with me, I'm thinking, "He thinks HE'S got the fever...?" Wow. And I've heard Bruce doesn't like this one. Whatever...um, sir. ;)

Sherry Darling

Sad-factory, I can still see my Dad bent over goin to work....

Angry- Seeds or Roulette, he is pissed.

Friendship - Highway Patrolman, what greater friendship than the one that starts with blood. Isn't that the basis of the song?

Romantic - Zero and Blind Terry - romance isn't always about love....

Desperate - Backstreets - ....but love is always about desperation.

Party - Sha La la - makes me wanna dance every time I hear it.

Sex - without a doubt..She's the One...that song is sex on a platter...straight, no chaser.
