Push to Name Navy Vessel draws criticism from gay community

Report is that Milk was a Navy officer and diver.

Right now the convention is to name USNS cargo ships after pioneers and civil rights leaders -

Arleigh Burke class destroyers are Naval and Marine Corp heros. You could certainly pick worse people for the latter, but depending on what awards he did that might be a bridge too far.

I have no idea how he would feel about it though.

FLOWERPOT SHOW REVIEW by Kevin White

Brilliant Disguise, a Bruce Springsteen tribute act, hit the stage launching straight into We Take Care Of Our Own from the latest album. This was followed swiftly by Badlands and Prove It All Night. The band played a stunning set spanning the Boss�s entire career.

The hits kept coming. The Rising complete with the audience singing along, Outlaw Pete, The River, Human Touch, The Ghost Of Tom Joad and Jungleland proved to be real crowd pleasers each getting a great reception.

Brilliant Disguise did a fantastic job of recreating the sound of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street, and sounded exactly like the real deal. The band fully engaged with the audience with banter and worked really hard. Highlights of the set included Waiting On A Sunny Day, Atlantic City, Hungry Heart and Fire. The show was brought to a close with incendiary versions of Thunder Road, Glory Days during which the two guitarists left the stage and walked through the crowd whilst still playing their instruments before ending with a powerful rendition of Born To Run.

The band returned to the stage to encore with Dancing In The Dark and the fantastic Ain�t Good Enough For You before finally leaving the stage. Brilliant Disguise rocked The Pot for just over two hours and forty minutes and delivered a stunning show that would have made Bruce Springsteen himself proud. It really was a truly enjoyable evening.

OK, just as some of us feared, the oldies slot in the shows seem to have disappeared. I don't mind a couple of crowd pleasers, but what's the problem with playing "Thundercrack", "E St shuffle" or "Seaside bar song" in Europe ? There was a time when those songs seemed to be "New Jersey only". Then they popped in a few shows in the US, and became regular highlights on this tour. Now, I wish the band played these gems here in Europe. It's only one or two songs each night, and it could very well be our last chance to hear and see them...
I must admit last night's setlist (great as the show must have been) is not to my liking really. But who am I to complain ?

The setlist needs a change

This is not a whining post about how terrible the shows have been - thay probably have been great.

But what It�d like to see is a real change in the structure of a Springsteen show. I�ve got a feeling that the main structure and certain songs have been unchanged for too long.

Trapped, Out in the streets, candy�s room, she�s the one, waiting, rising, lonesome day - why play these nght after night, tour after tour when there are plenty of real gems to choose from. Besides, many of the beforementioned songs are my least favorites.

Also the encores seem to have been unchanged since the 1992 tour: Born to run, Bobby jean, Dancing in the Dark. We only miss Glory days. I�d like to see more surprises in the encores.

I can�t say what would be a better selection of songs or a better encere, but I would certainly like to see a change!

Virginia�s General Assembly rejected a gay man for a Richmond judgeship early Tuesday, after conservatives argued that his support for gay marriage and challenge to the military�s now-defunct �don�t ask, don�t tell� policy made him unfit for the bench.

The House of Delegates voted 33 to 31, with 10 abstentions, to make Richmond prosecutor Tracy Thorne-Begland a General District Court judge in Richmond. He had needed 51 votes in the 100-member chamber to win appointment.

Iranian rapper faces death threats, bounty over song

Tehran - CNN - An Iranian rapper is facing death threats and has a $100,000 bounty on his head for a song that some say insults an Islamic Shiite imam.

Shahin Najafi, who sings in Farsi and lives in Germany, told the German website Qantara that the song "Naghi" is not about a religious figure but about the state of society in Iran.

"The story with 'Naghi' was just a pretext," Najafi said in an interview with Qantara, which the German Foreign Office funds to promote dialogue with the Islamic world.

"For me it is more of an excuse to talk about completely different things. I criticize Iranian society in the song. It seems as though people are just concentrating on the word 'imam,' " Najafi is quoted as saying.

Religious figures in Iran see it differently.

"Following the affront by rap singer Shahin Najafi against Imam Hadi (7th Imam of Shias) in a song called 'Naghi', his apostasy sentence has been issued by Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani," Iran's official Fars News Agency said in a website posting in Farsi.

Golpayegani is a grand ayatollah, which means the highest- ranking authority in Shiite Islam after prophets and imams. Being an apostate, or someone who forsakes Islam, is punishable by death under Iranian law.

"If the song contains any insults or indecency towards Imam Naghi, then it is blasphemy, and God knows what to do," Golpayegani, a 92-year-old Iranian cleric, is quoted as saying by Qantara.

A post on the blog entegham says Najafi should be sentenced to death.

"According to article 513 of Islam�s penal code: Anyone who insults the sanctity of Islam, anyone of the great prophets, the Imams, and Sadigheh Tahereh (the prophet�s daughter) should be executed," the post says.

The Iranian website Shia-Online.ir is offering $100,000 to anyone who kills Najafi. The money is being put up by "a philanthropist" in a Persian Gulf state, the website says.

In a blog post on Najafi, The Guardian in the UK calls Najafi "the Salman Rushdie of music," a reference to the author of "The Satanic Verses," who was given a religious death sentence by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 after Khomeini said Rushie's book was blasphemous.

But writing in the state-run newspaper Kayhan, columnist Sadollah Zarei says Najafi's case is different from Rushdie's, according to a New York Times report.

"This fatwa does not represent the government of Iran,� Zarei is quoted as saying. �This is done by a religious group in our society.�

I somehow missed this when he actually passed, but Eric Lowen died in March from ALS. Lowen & Navarro were best known as the songwriters for "We Belong" which was a huge hit for Pat Benetar, but they were excellent musicians in their own right. The height of their fame as probably in the early 90's, but they continued to tour and perform until 2009.

Eric made a great video about his struggle with ALS that was shown before their shows after he was diagnosed. Worth a watch....puts things in perspective. One of the alst times I saw them, they were laughing and joking about Eric's condition and Dan Navarro quipped "We all have a fatal disease - it is called 'Life'!!" While a bit fatalistic perhaps, there is something to be learned by that statement.

I was driving along early Saturday morning, and cued Darkness on my auto hard drive. As I listened to the 3-pack of Something in the Night/Candy's Room/Racin' I thought back to the first time listening to those.

Getting the fresh album from the local record store, going to my apt at college, slitting the cello wrapping and pulling out the album sleeve. Pulling the vinyl disc out, putting it on the turntable, checking the cartridge to make sure it was pristinely clean, and cueing the first track. then getting to those 3, oh so different from each other and each unique in its way, and reveling in the first listen, not knowing where Bruce would take me measure after measure. The primal howls at the start of SITN, the fabulous drum work, crescendos and screeching guitar of Candy, the plaintive opening of Racin'.

While I eagerly await any of these in a set today, and now ride along with the music as I know them so well, I really remembered the wonderful experience of the first time for these. It was special.

OK so Elvis Costello and his amazing spinning songbook show rolled into Liverpool Empire last night and he invited me up for a lovely version of 'Ferry 'cross the Mersey', which was cosmic. Then on the very last song of the night he did 'What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding' and I got dragged up again.... which was fab...but then....but then... but then... he only went into a bit of Rosalita for our little baba. It's here on YouTube so our Rosie will be able to see it when she's older.

TOKYO (AP) � Bass player and songwriter Donald "Duck" Dunn, a member of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame band Booker T. and the MGs and the Blues Brothers band, has died in Tokyo. He was 70.

Dunn was in Tokyo for a series of shows. News of his death was posted on the Facebook site of his friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour. Cropper said Dunn died in his sleep.

Miho Harasawa, a spokeswoman for Tokyo Blue Note, the last venue Dunn played, confirmed he died alone early Sunday. She had no further details.

Dunn, who was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1941, performed on recordings with Eric Clapton, Neil Young and many others, and specialized in blues, gospel and soul. He played himself in the 1980 hit movie "The Blues Brothers."

He received a lifetime achievement Grammy award in 2007 for his work with Booker T. and the MGs.

We all know the US maintains a National Strategic Petroleum Reserve and if you are a FB friend of min you know I maintain Strategic Whisky Reserve. I have also determined Egypt maintains a National Strategic Garbage Reserve. Watching AJE I learned Canada maintains a National Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve. Now I know if there are ever shortages in the US I don't need to contact the Log Cabin Republicans, I need to contact the State Department.

If I was watching US news all I would know is that Romney held a dog down while he cut its hair and then scared it to death which led to Obama eating it!
