A couple of months ago I bought my first ever Led Zep CD, Early Days & Latter Days. More because I felt I've never really listened but felt I should, bearing in my mind their reputation. Well, ok there's some good stuff on there (mainly the first CD) & they worked well as a band but some of their stuff was just a massive row.

Funny incident playing Whole Lotta Love in the car, where they get to the weird bit, ahh, ahh, ahh (you know what I mean), well the looks of the people while I was at the lights was priceless!

I was a big fan of the Smiths in the 80's but not got anything on CD so I got their Greatest Hits. Now, I know these two bands are completely different & Led Zep have such a massive reputation but I find the Smiths CD to be far more entertaining, it'll be getting lots more play than the dirge made by Led Zep.

Yeah, we're talkin' complete apples and oranges here but I dig both bands. Haven't actually listened to Zep in a long time but really got into them during high school. They made some great albums. But out of the two bands if I had to choose and throw one of their records on right at this moment it would be a record from The Smiths. I think Morrissey has written some absolute classics. Mother, There is a Light That Never Goes Out, Vicar in a Tutu. etc.

Now I work down at the carwash where all it ever does is rain

I could never get into The Smiths. I was persuaded to go and see them in concert and thought they were shit. Morrissey was a right miserable git.

Years later I too bought their Greatest Hits CD but it didn't change my mind - they're still shit.

Led Zep, on the other hand, were brilliant.

I guess you and I just don't share the same taste in music

I really can't stand The Smiths... Morrisey ruins that band for me.

I'm (hopefully) going to the Rotherham Real Ale festival this weekend. I'll keep a look out to see if there are any decent Bacardi Breezers I think you'd like.

I guess it depends whether your leanings are towards 'old wave' or 'new wave' as we used to say. I lean towards the latter and for me The Smiths were an infinitely superior recording band to Led Zeppelin on so many levels.

Never saw Zep Live. Saw the Smiths at Brixton Academy in March 1985 - the day the Miners Strike ended if I recall correctly - and they were shite.

I like Led Zep, but honestly I can't stand their diehard fans. They're elitists in my opinion. And as far as Led Zeppelin goes, they WERE very good, but I think people put them way too high on a pedestal. Now I know some may say we Bruce fans do the same. But look at Bruce...he's still going strong after all these years and where are the bands like Led Zeppelin?

The Smiths were brilliant. Morrissey's lyrics speak to me as much as Bruce's do. I love Johnny Marr's guitar style too. For me he is the greatest guitarist of all time. He proves you don't need endless solo's to be a fucking guitar God.

Not sure that I see much of a comparison between these two bands, but I actually love them both. Grew up listening to Zeppelin, but got caught up in the punk>>new wave>>alternative thing in the 80s and like many others came to see Zeppelin as corporate dinosaur rock. As a bit of an introverted self involved student, Morrisey's lyrics were right up my alley. And loved the literary references: "Keats and Yates are on your side." Damn. During the same period I had actually lost interest in Bruce too. Bruce's music of the time (BITUSA) was too outward focused and anthemic. I was living inside my own head, pumping fists with a bunch of strangers.

When I grew up and got over myself I started going back to my roots (Zeppelin, Bruce, The Who, et. al.). Something about Zeppelin's music and the way it penetrates the skull and shakes the nether regions that is just irresistible to me. And the musical virtuosity is just amazing. Zep gets slagged for being self-indulgent (long songs, long solos, cryptic lyrics), but honestly I think most of time it's by people with short attention spans who don't seem to be able to hold a continuous train of thought for longer than 3 minutes.

I've also always respected that when they called it quits they pretty much stuck to their word. I can't think of another big commercial band that so steadfastly refused to cash in. We can probably thank Bob for that.

Levitation is probably the closest analogy to what I feel - whether it's Jumpin' Jack Flash or Satisfaction or All Down The Line - when I realize I've hit the right tempo and the band's behind me. It's like taking off in a Learjet. I have no sense that my feet are touching the ground. I'm elevated to this other space. People say, "Why don't you give it up?" I can't retire until I croak. I don't think they quite understand what I get out of this. I'm not doing it just for the money or for you. I'm doing it for me.

I appreciate The Smiths now more than I did at the time, but Morrisey's introversion and self-absorption always made me want to slit my wrists. Love Johnny Marr though, and his jangly guitars redeemed the whole thing for me. Tried listening to The Queen is Dead as my wake up cd recently, only lasted the one morning, not the best recipe for starting the day with a spring in your step.

As for Led Zep - urrrggghhhh!!

Have ... a good time ... all of the time.

Maybe not the greatest of all time, but I do like Johnny Marr's guitar very much. What a shame he is associated with a miserable prick like Morrissey.
