A greatest hits compilation will be released instead of Bruce's unfinished 1994 album, and after a quick decision Bruce calls in the E Street Band, including Little Steven, to work on some bonus tracks. The band enters the Hit Factory in New York on this date, which is the first time they are in the same room recording since 1984. The session is filmed and footage will later be released on the Blood Brothers video.

The Greatest Hits session ends.

Bruce and the reunited band take the stage at Tramps in New York to film a video for "Murder Incorporated" in front of an invited audience. The video shoot turns into a two-hour gig with lots of old songs being played.

Greatest Hits debuts on Billboard's chart as number one.

In the afternoon Bruce and the band tape a performance for David Letterman's Late Show to be shown that night, and in the evening they do a two hour gig for Sony employees at the Sony Studios in New York. The latter gig is being filmed and footage is later used in several Springsteen documentaries by various US and international TV stations. Around this same time Bruce sits down for multiple TV interviews.

Bruce starts working on an acoustic folk album, which will be finished by August.

In an odd move, Bruce suddenly turns up at Cafe Eckstein in Berlin, Germany, to shoot a video for "Hungry Heart". A hastily assembled band consisting of German rock singer Wolfgang Niedecken and other German musicians constitute the backing band at what turns into an hour long gig. Other rumored appearances in European cities never materialize. Instead Bruce spends his holiday on the Canary Islands with Tom Hanks.

September 2
The E Street Band is once again briefly reunited for the opening concert of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland. Despite strong rumors of a tour in support of Greatest Hits, this is the last time the band is together until 1999.

October 10-18
For one week Bruce becomes a member of Joe Grushecky's band the Houserockers in what has become known as the "October Assault". Playing some scorching guitar for six shows at small clubs, Bruce helps his old friend promoting the American Babylon album.

Bruce once again performs at Neil Young's acoustic Bridge Benefit. He takes the opportunity to debut two songs from his upcoming album, The Ghost of Tom Joad.

November 21
The Ghost of Tom Joad is released. On the same day Bruce sets out on a solo acoustic tour in small theaters. The tour begins in New Brunswick, NJ, and will continue for the rest of the year in selected US cities. In the beginning the shows are dark and gloomy, focusing on the new material and completely ignoring the old hits.
