    World Cup 2022

A good result for Greece against Sweden to bring themselves back into contention.

    World Cup 2022

As a sop to Denmark for dominating them in the Euros, England give up their 100% record in the WC qualifiers leaving Denmark as the only team to win all their matches.

    World Cup 2022

Faroe Islands (better known for their annual whale slaughter than for their footballing prowess) put two goals past Scotland's last opponents Moldova for a famous victory.
  4. "Devil May Care" by Sebastian Faulks ("writing as Ian Fleming"). I found it in the local village phoned box library I've not read any of the Bond books but understand they're a bit clunky so this seems to capture the style perfectly! I'm not sure I'll bother to finish it although I've really enjoyed some of Faulks' other books. I was particularly taken by this description of the villain "He became obsessed by English culture and all that rather dreary stuff about cricket and fair play and tea-time. He thought it was all a gigantic fraud. He took it far more seriously than any English person. He made a fetish of British foreign policy and the Empire and thought he could show how brutal and unfair it had all been. I suppose the whole process must have taken some years to come to fruition but, to cut a long story short, he hated England because he felt it had laughed at him, and he decided to devote his life to destroying it."

    World Cup 2022

Farcical scenes in the Brazil v Argentina game with public health officials staging a pitch invasion to stop Argentinian players, who were in breach of quarantine regulations, taking part. I mean, it would be most unlike Argentina to cheat at football. Come on Oor Winnie, get out your picture of Scotland's best ever player!

    World Cup 2022

As the European qualifying groups reach the half-way stage, it all looks quite predictable with the expected teams in the qualifying places. There are only two countries that have a 100% record - Dr WOB's former favourites turned foes, Denmark and.....wait for it... surely not. No, our loudest, sorry, most authoritative contributor constantly tells us how rubbish they are. The tables must be lying but, apparently, it's England! Next up for England are Poland who have been more of a thorn in the side of English football than most countries. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-qualifying-european/table
  7. As England crumble, there's a chance for Scotland to get something out of what has been a miserable week for them - two poor footballing performances and Nicola Sturgeon betraying her base by having to pretend to not be anti-English!

    World Cup 2022

It's more likely that the Scotland supporters would be fighting to get out of the ground to avoid watching their team narrowly avoid being humbled by Michael Praed's boys.
  9. England/India would be finely balanced if it wasn't England to bat next! India must fancy themselves to be able to bat for at least a couple of hours on Sunday and still leave enough time to have a decent chance of getting England out without the total being in danger.
  10. Remember when Monaco and Marseille were big teams in Europe? Why doesn't French club football do better? Is it just not that popular there so doesn't get the TV income, sponsorship etc? It's not like the national team are unsuccessful.
  11. I can see why someone brought up on the two horse race that is Scottish football would venerate the Italian and Spanish leagues as exemplars of competitive competitions. In both Italy and Spain you have to go back to 2000 before you find five different league winners. England has had that many in the past nine seasons. You have to get in your Delorean and head to the mid-1960s before you find five different league winners in Scotland. Still, at least Italy and Spain's top teams show us how to run financially-sound clubs and don't have to panic sell/give away their best players. Oh, wait a minute...
  12. Do both teams know that there's another Test next week? They're batting like they've had enough and want to go home!

    World Cup 2022

With the FIFA World Cup in Qatar due to take place next year, there's a batch of European zone qualifiers at the moment. A good performance from England to win 4-0 away to Hungary - with the added distraction of racist chants and objects thrown from the Hungarian crowd. I wonder if, today, anyone's regretting buying a Hungarian replica shirt? An impressive away win for Northern Ireland, plenty of goals for Belgium, Italy suffering from a post-Euros hangover and being held to a draw at home by Bulgaria and Spain losing to Sweden made for some interesting results. In the battle of the minnows, Denmark beat Scotland comfortably. Sorry, I mean Andorra beat San Marino 2-0: Denmark are no minnows, they made it to the semi-final of the Euros.
  14. The Ronaldo move is a bit strange (and I don't believe Man U were gulled into it by Man City faking interest in signing him). Does he think he has a better chance of winning the Champions League at Man U than he did at Juventus? I know he's not lacking in self-confidence so probably thinks he can drag the team along single-handed to the next level but he must have his doubts about OGS as a manager. Even though Man U have been getting better there's still a suspicion that sometimes they do it in spite of OGS rather than because of him. He might turn out to be a great manager but it's a risky move for Ronaldo,to play for a manager who's improving rather than someone who's reached the top, with only a few years left competing for the biggest prizes.
  15. What a strange result in the Test. England staggered through the first two Tests and then they win with a day and a half to spare. Maybe India thought it would be a bit boring if the series was over now
  16. No, he's just an anti-English bigot who jumps on any bandwagon going to show his distaste for everything English. I don't know what caused this, perhaps his mam introduced him to one too many English "uncles" or maybe his pet dog was run over by an English-registered car? I'm hoping that, now he's started secondary school, a broader education will teach him to understand that we shouldn't treat people based on something as arbitrary as which country they're from. Imagine if Winston O'Bigot was the only Scotch person you'd encountered and you thought they were all like him! Thankfully, that's not the case, he's an aberration.
  17. A lot of the groups look good - either two or more currently good teams in them or one good and one historically good so plenty to generate interest.
  18. Harry Kane saves Spurs' blushes - unless there's a last-minute fightback. Good to see the big Scottish teams winning some European games. Aberdeen a bit of an embarrassment, I expect they'll be glad that no-one really knows what the point of the third tier competition is.
  19. General chat and comment about the European club competitions - rather than having to look in each club's thread.
  20. I haven't got my specs with me and, genuinely, read that as "extend his ordeal" which seems apt given the mess that club has been in the past few years.
  21. School's over for the day so expect a post from this week's India supporter in the next couple of hours.
  22. Barcelona coast to victory over one of the top Spanish sides without Messi.
  23. How right you are, the Premier League has only had five different winners in the past ten seasons.
  24. That's what I came up with - has a certain implication that they're dying and off to heaven. If you asked Bruce, he'd probably say we're overthinking and that's what they called the penny arcades on the front
  25. Not me, always heard "Wendy" despite having fairly rubbish hearing. Can't believe it's not "through", I always that it was through (but didn't understand what it meant)
