The Doughtmeister
Earthslayer, many thanks for this info + all the other bands, really interesting stuff......eg Elvis v The Beatles at about 150 million albums each - staggering ! I had a Bob Seger blitz at Christmas and requested about 7 Bob albums on CD from my daughters who being teenagers obviously had no idea who he was ! have been enjoying the stuff since receipt. Rock and sausage roll.
Bill Lane
I am surprised the Bob has outsold Neil. Neil has always been so experimental and prolific. I guess that does not necessarily translate into sales. Still both are favorites of mine along with Bruce.
Earthslayer
I am surprised the Bob has outsold Neil. Neil has always been so experimental and prolific. I guess that does not necessarily translate into sales. Still both are favorites of mine along with Bruce.-------------Young has only ever had one big hit song "Heart Of Gold"....whereas Seger has had a bunch of big hits in the USA, which in turn really drove up the sales of several of his late 70's-early 80's albums plus his mid-90's 'Greatest Hits' album (which continues to be one of the biggest selling back-catalog sellers in the USA of the past 20 years). Another thing to keep in mind is that these are USA-only sales stats. Worldwide Neil Young makes up that difference and has actually sold more albums than Seger has. Neil has significantly better career-to-date album sales in Europe than Bob Seger does. Seger is a bit like Mellencamp in that regard - neither of them has sold well outside US-Canada, whereas Dylan, Springsteen and Young have found much broader sales success.Lastly one should not forget that Neil Young has been an integral creative part of another huge block of album sales with CSNY (+ Buffalo Springfield + The Stills-Young Band). kung-fu carl
Mr. Earthslayer sir, do you by chance have any stats for Jackson Browne records? I know he's certified for something like 17.5 million in the US, but he's got a number of uncertified albums that I'm sure have sold a few copies at least. Have you got numbers for Mr. Browne? Earthslayer
Quote-------------------------Very little Soundscan data on Browne's albums has leaked in order to do a very accurate analysis... ...but that having been said he has 18.5 million disc units (18.5 million albums) certified by the RIAA...and a quick look at his uncertified catalog would seem to indicate his total USA album sales would be roughly 22 million. McParadigm
I find these posts fascinating. It's interesting to see some classic, seemingly-omnipresent records who've had decades of love heaped upon them sit at such low sales figures (ie Ziggy Stardust).I'd be curious to see Tom Waits's figures. Earthslayer
I find these posts fascinating. It's interesting to see some classic, seemingly-omnipresent records who've had decades of love heaped upon them sit at such low sales figures (ie Ziggy Stardust).I'd be curious to see Tom Waits's figures.Ziggy and indeed virtually all of Bowie's albums have historically done much better pan-Europe. He's a bit like Queen and Abba in that regard....respectable sales in the USA but never at their UK and pan-European level. Someone like, for example, Bob Seger is the exact opposite....very strong sales in the USA but he's never been able to carry that sales level pan Europe.
McParadigm
I think I find those examples, and some similar ones ones, interesting primarily because those records are such huge reference points. I remember Bowie being an enormously adored figure among my peers when I was in high school, which was a good double decade after it dropped. It's just crazy to me that a record like Ziggy gets praised, discussed, written about, played on the radio, talked up on television, etc. etc. etc., and only that many Americans have ever flipped to it at a record store and thought "Shit, I've heard this one's pretty great. Might as well grab it."
