I think Sunderland can wave goodbye to a future show on that evidence. It seemed an odd choice at the time when there was no Scotland or midlands UK show going on to complement Manchester and HRC.

There must have been a reason for not having Cardiff Milennium Stadium too come to think of it.

If we have to have stadia I would go for Emirates (south) Villa Park (midlands) Old trafford (north) and then Cardiff and Glasgow. Plus 2 x Dublin.

To be fair Sunderland was a week night,Manchester was a Friday.Alot depends on the day of the week.I remember Old trafford being far from full on a week night.

As for playing the Emirates again...no thanks.Total farce with noise restrictions, special soundproofing for the stadium, curfew.

Ty Eartslayer.

I don't remember if I already posted this question, or if I only had it in mind :

Bruce usually has bigger album sales when he's touring Europe. But is it the 1st time that the sales increase are that impressive ?

I guess it also happens to other artists like Madonna, U2, etc.

---------------

Springsteen has always gotten a very strong 1-3 week catalog sales bounce in countries in Europe as his tour moves through each country. It's like that for U2 as well. It happens to some other artists too, but it's not nearly as noticable on the charts as it has been for Springsteen (and U2).

One doesn't see that kind of tour sales spike phenomenon in the US, or even Canada. A given artist touring North America just doesn't generate the kind of major pan-national media interest and publicity that it does when a superstar artist visits a given Euro nation. Perhaps the one exception might be when an artist performs at the USA Super Bowl - one does see a 1-2 week sales spike, but it is not nearly as dynamic as the kind of phenomenon one sees across the pond.

Europe is made up of roughy 50 countries and onlookers have an advantage in that half those countries have national sales charts. The USA is made up of 50 states but there are no state-by-state charts released by Billboard or Soundscan. If there were such charts one would probably notice a modest sales spike in a specific state as Springsteen's Tour visits it - but that rogue sales spike is not enough to affect the large USA market and USA Chart as a whole.

Interestingly where one does see a bigger sales spike in North America than in Europe is when a popular artist dies suddenly. Most recent examples of this would be Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston - much stronger and longer lasting sales spike in the USA for both these artists' catalog than it was anywhere in Europe or the rest of the world.

--------------------

Springsteen's 'Greatest Hits' (95) passed the 1 million mark in UK retail sales in 2009. Music Week released that info - and MW has access to official sales data from the OCC. That was about 3 years ago and that album seems to very consistenly sell 50k-90k per year in the UK.....so I'd estimate Greatest Hits ('95) UK sales are now in the 1.15 to 1.20 million range.

So given that Bruce has now sold about 445,000 copies of WB in the US, do you think he's nearing gold certification in the United States? I mean....there must be a fair number of copies left on store shelves throughout the country that would count toward the 500,000 shipped, yes?

-------------------

For decades and even up until a few years ago 445k-retail in the USA would certainly have meant there were over 500k-wholesale. However things have changed quite dramatically over the last 5 ot 6 years. Far fewer retail stores, the growth in non-physical sales and much more conservative wholesale volume ordering - combined these factors, and others, have resulted in smaller differentials between wholesale and retail numbers in the US marketplace for albums that are more than a few months old. There are exceptions to the rule - but those exceptions are becoming fewer and farther between.

As a consequence, 445k retail for an album 6 months old that is only selling 2-3k per week? - there may not be 500k wholesale sales yet. It's clearly getting close to the mark but it might be that it'll need to be around 475k retail to pass the 500k wholesale mark.

It would not surprise me if "Wrecking Ball' was certified "gold" in the USA tomorrow.....then again, I would not be surprised if it didn't happen until December or January. The way its sales have been tracking the album appears to be headed for passing 500k retail in the USA sometime during the first quarter of 2013 (unless there is a Xmas bounce).

200,000 shipped in the UK is platinum certification right? We ought to be reaching that milestone quite soon...

----------------

No, Platinum threshold for albums is 300,000 in the UK.

Minimum Level......UK...........Japan.........Germany

Gold.....................100k...........100k............100k

Platinum...............300k...........250k............200k

Gold and Platinum levels have stayed the same in the UK since they began giving awards out in the early 70's. Japan's levels for Gold have stayed the same for decades but it actually increased its Platinum level from 200k to 250k in mid 2002. Germany's levels have gotten much lower over the past 13 years or so - in the 70's, 80's and up to 1999 it was 250k (Gold) / 500k (platinum) in Germany - harder to get an award there back in the 70's and 80's.

Do you have the sales figures for the collection in the UK? it may be close to gold/silver.

----------------

'The Bruce Springsteen Collection: 1973-84' sold 61,300 copies during its first 2 months on sale in the UK according to official OCC figures. What has it since sold in the UK over the past 18 months or so? I wish I knew - I haven't seen any official sales stats after Week-8, which is when it initially dropped out of the UK Top-200. I don't know if that album has been typically selling 30-40 or 250-350 copies per week in the UK. I'm currently using a projected estimate of 75,000 sales for it in the UK.

Mark.....I think you're correct that this is the first time since the TRACKS-18 TRACKS period that there has been no official press release from either the Springsteen organization (Shore Fire Media) or from Columbia/Sony about any "Gold" or "Platinum" Awards with respect to one of Springsteen's primary album releases. I don't know for a fact - but I suspect what has held up such a press release this time is that 'Wrecking Ball' has yet to reach "Gold" level in the USA. It's his first primary album release not to go "gold" in the USA very quickly since.....well, since WIESS actually.

If one goes back and looks at old official press releases - they have used a USA sales award as a trigger or as the primary headline of the press release and then fleshed that press release out by mentioning other gold or platinum awards the album has achieved in other countries. The mainstream USA press is notoriously USA-centric and shows little interest in publishing news stories about non-USA music sales achievements, so Shore Fire Media and/or Columbia-Sony are probably concerned such a press release won't be picked up by key USA media unless there is an announcement of a USA award.

So, it may be that they are waiting for 'Wrecking Ball' to reach "Gold" in the USA and then they'll issue a press release on the subject. But it's kinda late in the sales cycle now so it wouldn't surprise me if they don't do anything. After all, Springsteen has never been an artist that heavily promotes or advertises his gold and platinum sales awards, in fact to the best of my knowlege only once in history has Springsteen or his management turned up in person in any country to collect a sales award (Bruce and Landau turned up at a ceremony in Spain in 1997 to collect an IFPI "Platinum" Sales award for 'Ghost Of Tom Joad'- Bruce was touring in Spain at the time).
