Cheers

So many more people need to own the Hammersmith CD though.

Although only 250k-300k folks worldwide have bought the Hammersmith CD.....keep in mind that an additional 650k-700k folks own that Hammersmith audio through owning the DVD in the BTR 30TH Anniversary package.

Kinda similar situation with regards to the LIVE IN NYC and LIVE IN DUBLIN albums.....the corresponding video edition stunts the sales of the audio-only (CD) edition...or vice versa.

One of the key reasons the LIVE IN BARCELONA video has accumulated such strong sales over the years is that there is no LIVE IN BARCELONA album (CD) to compete with it.

And still I can't remember people complaining even half as much about either of those albums than they whined about the Hammersmith CD...

If anyone is privy to any Springsteen USA Soundscan figures more current than these please let us know!

I've got an updated figure for the digital sales of the Born in the USA track. The week of July 4, 2013, the track sold roughly 12,000 copies in the US; this should bring the track's digital sales to about 791,000. Here's the link; the figure is some distance down on the page: http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-july-7-2013-songs-actress-top-213747613.html

Fascinating stuff... never really looked at this before. I love facts and figures

For me the maths hint at a few things that I believe:

The overwhelming majority of a Bruce crowd own BITUSA and Greatest Hits with a few other albums thrown in, which in turn, means some will grow restless, go to toilet, and chatter through tracks they've never heard before - If I Should Fall Behind at Leeds an example. And so, apart from the hard core fans in the seats, this is why we only really see the Pit engaged during these songs; contrast this with the crowd interaction during DITD, BTR or BITUSA?! So, at many shows, Bruce, is right to play the BITUSA album - but not WIESS - to cater for the masses and not just please a few die-hards who attended one of his BITUSA shows last week...

The fan base in the likes of Ireland, Sweden, Holland et al, has grown significantly in the last fifteen years or so with new fans and returning fans...

There's a lot of Seventies/Eighties fans who lost contact with Bruce's work in the Nineties, or grew disenchanted and carried on with their lives until they rediscovered his new work in the last decade. So, we've seen a return to big tours and even harder to get tickets, but not an increase in album sales (although copying Cd's is so prevalent now, as well as the media of music production changing enough to make comparable sales figures with the Eighties moot)... I only realised by pure luck after opting for a New York holiday in 2000 when browsing through a Virgin brochure that he was touring. I bought a package to the MSG shows in a heartbeat, but he had been off my radar since '93... sure I bought GOTJ, yet I missed the shows because they were not advertised for the masses... respect to those who still followed him through this period...

The hard core probably own most of these albums if not all - and depending on what figures you use, you could guess roughly how many die hard's there are in the major countries based on obscure album sales?! (It seems per head Ireland have more fans than the UK). In the main though, the hard core are all connected by a few steps to each other through FB, Twitter, BTX and GL, and we probably know each others faces in our own countries from concerts, even if we don't know everyone's name...

There's not many of us hard core fans... but there's lots who own a copy of BITUSA, BTR and DITD and these casual fans will take an opportunity to see Bruce when he's close to their town and knock him of their bucket list... this is why Bruce has to geographically mix up his shows occasionally...

Live albums/DVD's sell well above average in the countries they were filmed in...

I still call CDs albums

The UK is comprised of people who buy Greatest Hits and Essential CD's when shopping in ASDA, Tesco etc... and this is probably similar in the US with Wal-Mart and outlets in other countries... these shops tend to stock BITUSA, but very few other albums, so no surprises with other album sales... WTCOOO will stay on ASDA's catalogue for a few months at its release, but then drop off while the Greatest Hits will always be on sale there...

Earthslayer deserves a round of applause and enormous respect :D

Now, Earthslayer, do you reckon you could calculate ( a guess I appreciate) how many die hard's there are in the major Bruce countries? And also tell us what happened in Oz and South America that made Landau take the shows there... I'd love it if you could :)

I had no idea that BTR and The River sold that much better than Darkness. And Nebraska too - I mean, obviously a depressing solo acoustic album isn't going to sell like BITUSA, but people who hate Bruce will very often follow up with "...but Nebraska is pretty good" so I'd have thought it would have more crossover appeal.

The Essential has now gone Platinum in UK 300 000 over the counter sales.

The earlier Gold certification of Nebraska is, presumably, for over the counter sales since 1994, the cut off date for the OTC certification.

+1

Fascinating reading, thank you Earthslayer. And seeing the South African sales figures is something I've always wondered about.

It confirmed for me that, as I suspected, sales wise internationally we really are small fry, which makes me even more grateful that Bruce is finally playing here.

I would have made a pretty safe bet on which albums were the top selling Bruce albums in SA and been correct.

I am amazed, even though they are really small numbers, at how many of the box sets have sold here. I have yet to ever meet another person who also owns either the BITUSA or Darkness boxes.

Thank you again!

Steve, I own both, as does another friend of mine in Cape Town. So now we have accounted for three...

PS. I see channel24.co.za is streaming High Hopes. the title track has already had almost 60,000 listens it seems! At least the local audiences will know the new songs.
