Do the numbers for the REM releases include reissues? All of their albums have been rereleased in a multidisc, remastered format. Thanks!

The 19,300,000 Soundscan figure (tabulation period: Jan 1991 thru Sep 2011) includes any and all variations of all REM's USA-released albums. So it's a comprehensive figure, in fact that 19,300,000 figure also includes the handful of EPs that REM issued in the USA - the 19,300,000 figure was not released with the itemized breakdowns but it doesn't seem the total EP sales are a significant % of the total.

To the best of my knowledge all the post-2005 itemized Soundscan figures shown above include the sales from that slew of remastered-reissues albums that were released during 2005 or around the period.

The just-released "GREEN - 25TH Anniversary Edition" on Rhino - as yet it hasn't appeared on the main Top-200 Sales Chart or the Top-200 Catalog Chart or any of the other sub-charts. So at the moment I'm not sure if this will be considered a stand-alone album in its own right (and as such eligible for its own RIAA gold/platinum award) or whether its sales will be added to the sales of the original Green album.

REM's sales (either for new releases or back-catalog) have been poor in the USA since around 2000.....shockingly so in my opinion - it's a bit baffling really. Different story though pan-Europe and even next door in Canada - they have performed much better during the 2000-2013 period in those regions.

The sales pattern is indeed interesting. You are correct in the 2005 date for the Warner reissues. Did they do another edition of Green in addition to the '05 remaster? As far as my opinion of their music goes, I was all in through Up in '98, and then the Man On The Moon soundtrack in '99. I thought The Great Beyond was a good tune. I enjoyed the Imitation of Life single, but was a bit disappointed in the Reveal album. I actually liked Around The Sun better, but the critics here in the US felt the opposite. I also liked the '03 compilation, as well as the other IRS cd/dvd that was released in '06 I think. It seems like they started to fade a bit in the '00s, coming back pretty strong with that cd in '08. I'm surprised that one didn't sell more, but at least the critics liked it.

Thanks for the link! I will probably end up buying this just for the live disc, and just for the version of Perfect Circle that they played on that tour.

Ok, I'm definitely buying the damn thing now. I just read on their website that the live show is Greensboro. That was the only REM show I ever attended!

There is a new, 25th Anniversary Edition of Green that was scheduled to be released in the US on May 13th. I'm not sure if it will appear on this weeks' Billboard Charts or next week's....provided it sells enough to even make the Charts.

Here are details from Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Green-25th-Anniversary-Deluxe-Edition/dp/B00BPXKWGS

UPDATE....UPDATE...info just in

Green: 25th Anniversary Edition appears this week at #100 in the main USA Top-200 Chart, with sales of 4,027 copies. That's not a bad showing actually. It is listed as a "Re-Entry", so it doesn't appear as if this will be considered a new, standalone, release - in fact it doesn't appear in the New Albums Sub-Chart. The album is being released by Rhino-Warner and the 4,027 sales are being added to the ongoing Soundscan tally thread...the total for Green is now 727,294, which means that, including this week, the Green album has only sold about 32,000 copies since Jan 2006, which is the last Soundscan total that surfaced before this.

The situation seems in Canada is slightly different. Green: 25th Anniversary Edition did not sell enough to make the Canada Top-200 Chart but it did sell enough to make the Back-Catalog Sub-Chart (#145, with sales of 143 copies)....and the soundscan sales string for it also shows 143 copies total to date - so it would appear that, unlike Soundscan USA, the sales of this 25th Anniversary Edition album are being tallied by Soundscan Canada separate from the original album.

Some updated info....so please note that I've made some corrections to some of the details in update paragraphs directly above
