I wonder whether Pep will have any clever tactical plans lined up for the Chelsea game, such as, again maybe, going with no holding midfielders as per his brilliant idea in the Champions League final back in May. How he must still be haunted by that night, lol.

I find this a very interesting argument. The two games before the CL final Chelsea found away to shut us out both times. I think it was him trying to find away to score against them.

Two things happened in that match, one has something to do with no holding mid-fielder. And that was a perfect pass down the middle of the field. Mount will never be able to make that pass again. 1000 in 1 chance. Second part of this, (I'm sort of new to this sport), Chelsea had a "MAN" in there middle, Kante, one of the most outstanding matches from any one person I've ever seen.

So in the end, Pep should have played a Holding Middle, and hope for penalties, that we haven't been good at all season.

Definitely a pivotal two PL games for Pep. Lose both and they could be 9 points off top spot. Win both and they could end up top or thereabouts.

I think you said it best either here or in some other thread, I think at this point of the season Pep will be not happy but satisfied with 2 points over the next two match's.

MC playing well - better than I expected TBH - and Jesus's goal was well deserved all around.  They can't let up though - I expect Chelsea is too well coached and too confident to let this rattle them much.

And as far as I remember City lost both despite playing defensive midfielders.

Obviously a good result for City today but I think it will suit Liverpool.  Maybe not as much as a draw but probably a decent result for them.  Of course its early and the league table doesn't mean a whole lot yet.

Three of the most ugly goals in awhile. Foden's first goal needs to be change to an own goal, no?

I think it was the second goal where they brought it down nearly the length of the pitch - that was pretty nice. I don't think it was but I only saw it as a clip on my phone.

I guess we have to let someone else win every once in awhile! :(

Penalty shoot outs are always a bit of a crap shoot.  And no club can win any cup every year.  So meh... well played, congrats to West Ham and maybe on the 6th they can put Solchar's head in the trophy case ;).

I know I'll piss off the purest here, but here goes nothing.

"The Own Goal" today John Stones got credited with a Own Goal. Sounds like Stones just kicked the ball into his own net!, doesn't it? When really the pass came across the goal defected off someone and then off his head before he could move and the ball into the net.

Why not just give the goal to the last offensive player who touched the ball, like they do in hockey?

Probably to avoid the issue surrounding judging a play an "error" as happens in baseball.  It's subjective and sometimes punishes a player (and a batter) when the fielder almost makes a hell of a play.  You are of course correct in that there are harsh own goals vs. "bad own goals but the current system has the virtue of a fairly clear cut standard and managers and fans are knowledgeable enough to distinguish bad luck from howlers.  Admittedly the current system sometimes punishes offensive players when a strike that is going to score anyways is slightly deflected and the defender is "credited" with an own goal but no system is perfect.

Well that was a very nice response! I expecting something very much harsher :D, and maybe that is yet to come! ;)

OK, a win is a win. But after performance I now believe a main striker is needed. We should have won 5-0. But we passed the ball around the pitch nicely. DeGea was great today.
