One of the best lyricists around today.

"It's not the long flowing dress that you're in
Or the light coming off of your skin
The fragile heart you protected for so long
Or the mercy in your sense of right and wrong

It's not your hands, searching slow in the dark
Or your nails leaving love's watermark
It's not the way you talk me off the roof
Your questions like directions to the truth

It's knowing that this can't go on forever
Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we'll get forty years together
But one day I'll be gone or one day you'll be gone

If we were vampires and death was a joke
We'd go out on the sidewalk and smoke
And laugh at all the lovers and their plans
I wouldn't feel the need to hold your hand

Maybe time running out is a gift
I'll work hard 'til the end of my shift
And give you every second I can find
And hope it isn't me who's left behind

It's knowing that this can't go on forever
Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we'll get forty years together
But one day I'll be gone or one day you'll be gone

It's knowing that this can't go on forever
Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we'll get forty years together
But one day I'll be gone or one day you'll be gone"

I feel like I'm going to be spoiled with a new Isbell album AND a new Roger Waters album this year. When people say to me 'there is no decent new music anymore' I just laugh at them now.

I don't know Jason's personal background........has he lost a partner at some point?

Looking at these lyrics and thinking back to "Elephant".... recurring theme?

I'm not sure but I don't think so... I remember him saying Elephant was about a female friend,  not a lover. But I may be misremembering this.

This new one is very specifically about him and Amanda. Like I've seen folks say, who else can write a song that can be played at a Wedding AND a funeral?

It's essentially the post honeymoon realisation that as good as it is, it has to end at some point, so, as the song says, 'maybe time running out is a gift...'

Yes and Jason is rightly proud of this song, having described it as one of the best he's ever written.

Another new one:

[Verse 1]
I'm a white man living in a white man's world
Under our roof is a baby girl
I thought this world could be her's one day
But her momma knew better

[Verse 2]
I'm a white man living in a white man's town
Want to take a shot of cocaine a burn it down
Momma wants to change that Nashville sound
But they're never gonna let her

[Chorus]
There's no such thing as someone else's war
Your creature comforts aren't the only things worth fighting for
You're still breathing it's not too late
We're all carrying one big burden, sharing one fate

[Verse 3]
I'm a white man living on a white man's street
I've got the bones of the red man under my feet
The highway runs through the burial grounds
Past the oceans of cotton

[Verse 4]
I'm a white man looking in a black man's eyes
Wishing I'd never been one of the guys
We pretended not to hear another white man's joke
Oh, times haven't forgotten

[Chorus]
There's no such thing as someone else's war
Your creature comforts aren't the only things worth fighting for
You're still breathing it's not too late
We're all carrying one big burden, sharing one fate

[Verse 5]
I'm a white man living in a white man's nation
I think the man upstairs must have took a vacation
I still have faith, but I don't know why
Maybe it's the fire in my little girl's eyes
Maybe it's the fire in my little girl's eye

Sounds great! and possibly my favourite so far.

I must admit though, this periodic dropping of songs that is common these days, does take away somewhat from the actual release.

I know I am free to ignore them and wait, but I have zero will power where new music is concerned.

Yeah... I agree. Having said that, I've got the album already and it's bloody great!

Staying away from the new songs until the album comes out.  Have heard a couple of them and they sound great.  Anyway, new interview with Jason here.  Interesting stuff.

Well since it was streaming in its entirety on NPR I gave it a listen.  Holy shit.  That might be the closest thing to a perfect record that I have heard since BTR.  It's THAT good.

Not sure I'll go now. Can't stand this venue or location.

Ah FUCK OFF.

The Academy is a rank bad venue with rank bad accoustics..........in a much worse location.

The ABC's always had decent accoustics any gig I've been at and there's much more going on Charing Cross way for pre and post shenanigans.

Disappointing.

Yep. Presumably we get message from TM soon. A refund will be an option, one I'll probably take. I vowed never to return to the Academy after my last visit there.

Why has it been changed, RD?

Don't really know. The Academy holds more. Jason's show isn't the only act that's been moved, maybe the O2ABC is being renovated or something.

The Doobie Brothers are also scheduled for the Academy. I'm well pissed off because I'd have gone to see them again. They were great in Dublin in 2010.

I've been to three gigs there and the accoustics have been bogging every time. The location doesn't bother me really, still central enough, there's just loads more on offer pre and post in Charing Cross.

I'll still go to the gig, a pal of mine who used to live in the Weeg went to loads of gigs there where he said the accoustics were fine so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the early notification riverdude, not so handy as already got hotel booked just round corner from ABC, will still be going mind you, and now looks like The Scotia pre & post show for me.
