I wonder if a single song would be enough to qualify it for a release. Sure, it would be timely, and have an impact. But if that is the only reason for release, then I'm not so sure.

Whey, we can always assume this is the case for Detroit '88 and "Walk Like a Man".

A lot of good stuff on that show, but if there's no "Walk Like a Man", is it worth the hassle?

The River tour was my first show, Fall of 1980 in the dump that jumps. I was 12 years old and just purchased my first Van Halen records. My Mom had a fight with her boyfriend. So off I went with her.

Seriously, don't open the spoiler if you want to be surprised on Friday.

I'm sad.  Also, had a car crash today on my way home... slid down an icy road, straight into the back of a parked car.  So all round not very pleasing day.

That's now two of us who don't think this month's release will be tailored to recent events. Welcome to the club.

Thanks

I'd rather a show that is strong enough on it's own, performance and setlist wise, and just so happens to include 41 shots. Rather than a show that has 41 shots and is a fairly average show overall.

The Garden shows in 2000 are really great on this point of view, especially June 22

Updated with yesterday's Previously review linked. Only six shows left to write about, I never imagined I'd be writing that this time last year.

I think the delay could be exactly for that reason. The planned show had no song or theme linkable to recent events, so to temper any 'why didn't Bruce use the archive show to make a statement' type carry on they've moved the release out a week.

I’m not sure what you’re saying here but so what? Murder by bullet of by chocking is Murder

41 shots, Lena gets her son ready for school
She says, "On these streets, Charles
You've got to understand the rules
If an officer stops you, promise me you'll always be polite
And that you'll never ever run away
Promise Mama you'll keep your hands in sight"

It ain't no secret
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living in your American skin

It is these lyrics that are relevant. The song isn't just about the shots that were fired at Amadou Diallo, but the fact that Bruce recognised that black people are treated differently on account of the skin colour. And they were being killed because of it.

When you read these lyrics, you can't say that "black people are treated differently on account of the skin colour. And they were being killed because of it."

Explicitely, you can get killed just for living in your american skin. It's not really about what colour your skin is, it's more about the power of death cops have on each one of us and potentially how we are all fragile.

It's an amazing song because, already back then, and 2 years before the release of The Rising (in which American Skin could have easily get its place), Bruce told about the real problem that is the distance between the police and the people through all these rules. And that's the most tragic

The lyrics of “41 Shots” don’t actually specify a particular race or color but yes I know the incident that inspired the song.

I assumed she was of Norwegian origin...

It didn't need to be—at least, until very recently, white parents in America didn't have to have The Talk with their kids the way Black parents have always had to.

I think the whole point to specify that you can get killed just for "living in your American skin" and not something along the line "being American" or "live in the USA" etc is that afro-americans/people of color/blacks or what ever is the term of choice are Americans just like people of no color. An American skin is sometimes black and as an American you can killed for just being black. So, Lena and her son are black. The rules she talks about are the rules that a  black male must follow to avoid being killed by a cop. For a white guy the rules are less strict. That's what her son must understand and live by.

Lena tells Charles to be polite to officers, never run away, and keep his hands in sight.

Why is that such bad advice for anyone of any race?  And are those things that whites shouldn’t also do for police officers?

They're things white people don't HAVE to do in order to not be killed. It's very, very hard to believe someone in Minnesota isn't well aware of this by now, and that you're not just being disingenuous.

But I suspect we're now verging into banhammer territory, so I'm going to leave it at that.

The thing is, what is great about this song is that, this idea is said of course but not really clearly. I don't think Bruce wanted to make a song about this drama focusing about the "black problem" (sorry, even I, is uncomfortable about this way of speaking); it's more about making americans understand that, distance between the people and the police with coded rules is killing the country.

The Archive Series. OMG ... and more on the way ....

What was the latest bootleg you listened to. Not that I've deleted mine.
(I would buy "Barcelona Live" again if it came on bluray in 1080p.)

Thanks to Paolo's reviews :
