First times shown are GMT, Apollo and Agora are the same thread, Agora release page linked.

2020 has been a very strong year of releases, particularly songs-wise. I started thinking this morning about what "the Series’ Top 10 songs of 2020" would be if I was writing it now and there's at least 17 tracks that are competing for the top 10

And there are four releases to go this year - maybe even five if we're lucky. Oh boy.

The River tour was my first show, Fall of 1980 in the dump that jumps. I was 12 years old and just purchased my first Van Halen records. My Mom had a fight with her boyfriend. So off I went with her.

Seriously, don't open the spoiler if you want to be surprised on Friday.

I'm sad.  Also, had a car crash today on my way home... slid down an icy road, straight into the back of a parked car.  So all round not very pleasing day.

The fact that The Wrestler, Kingdom of Days, Frankie, Where the Bands Are, Long Walk Home, and Walk Like a Man (either one!) aren't guaranteed to crack your top 10 says something about this year of archives...

Since Lost in the flood will take the #1 spot, you only have to worry about 9  :)

If that outro on the wrestler had been 2 minutes longer it would still have been too short. Sublime.

There's also bound to be another track on one of theses seven releases we've currently got from this year that creeps up and makes an emphatic statement in the coming months. It's the Archive Series' way.

So after a quick count of certain songs that came to mind from the year's releases so far - to confirm - there are 24 songs currently vying for the top 10.

It's only August ffs

Do you already want to share your list or only publish the top 10 when it's ready?

I am interested in the contenders.

A bit of both, honestly

I'm tempted to both post the obvious suspects now on here, write a "top ten so far" blog or just avoid the question and ask you guys what your top 10s are.

So I'll share the current top 11 off the top of my head on this thread in no particular order, because I'm nice like that :D

Spoiler tag attached for those who don't want to know.

  • "Jungleland" - 28/7/12

This release might have more gems than any other from the tour. It's a diamond of a show.

I'd still like to know all of your top 10s mind.

Uhhh...

1. The Wrestler

2. Frankie

3. Walk Like a Man (88)

4. Something from London '06, but can't pick between Old Dan Tucker, Devils & Dust, Long Time Comin', Long Walk Home, How Can a Poor Man..., and Froggie Went a-Courtin'

5. Kingdom of Days

6. Ramrod ('05)

7. Point Blank ('99)

8. Jungleland (Gothenburg '12)

9. It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City ('12) <-- I know this version isn't anything special but it wasn't until hearing it in this show that the song really jumped out to me. It was always just "there," but it was hearing it during this show that I fell in love with it

10. Jersey Girl ('81)

Relistening to London 06 today, shuffled and got Froggie, Open All Night and Long Time Coming

The one thing I don't like about the seeger version of open all night is the scat singing bits. Which is why I prefer the versions on the WB tour.

At this point I’d take a remix of the Barcelona 2002 show.  Shirley they have to have professionally recorded tapes for that one?

If they release that, then I'd say that it was an admission that the rest of the tour is irretrievably buggered.

A slight complication would be that the show is licenced to Sony for the DVD and would need their consent (the Houston release and the "missing" Tempe songs were both explicitly stated to be released with the consent of Sony). However, in view of Sony getting 12.5% of the gross of these releases, I can't see why they would want to refuse consent given how long it is since the DVD release.

The scat singing on London is made 100 % more bearable by the absence of Patti. No disrespect, this is purely a comment on her singing style, particularly on this song as featured on Live In Dublin, that 'zoit, zoit' stuff is like nails down a chalk board to my ears. It's also a lot shorter. I love the rest of the Seeger Sessions arrangement of Open All Night.

Froggie Went A Courtin is a great song, and performance, love the audience participation, and the harmonica solo.  If you can track it down, check out Dylan's version, he included a lot more verses.

Okay, about a week from now we will be reacting to the delay announcement tweet.

I'd be surprised if it ran on time, more so because we've only had two weeks with London 06, but how they would bring the series back on schedule any other way, I'm not sure.

Would love for the September 4th release to go off without a hitch, but I'd also be cool if they want to take an extra week with it - that way it'll only be 3 weeks until October 2nd when they'll hopefully be properly back on track.

Regardless, I'm going to try and have my Cape Town #3 review finished and ready for publishing for next Friday just in case. Only 17 songs out of 30 left to write about!
