Announcing the 3rd Not Quite Annual Greasy Lake Bruce Cover Song contest - DEADLINE EXTENDED

Recommended Posts

After countless requests - or at least one - I've decided to launch the 3rd installment of the Greasy Lakers Cover Bruce Song Contest. If you are a member of Greasy Lake and enjoy playing music, this is your chance to show the community your abilities and to win a grand prize in the process. All you have to do is submit an mp3 of a song written by Bruce Springsteen and performed by you (and your band) before January 14, 2018 (note the new deadline). This should give you plenty of time to rehearse, record, mix, etc.

After everyone has submitted their songs, the community will be able to listen to all the entries and vote on their favorites. The song with the most votes wins. The exact prize has yet to be determined, but it will most likely be a unique Greasy Lake t-shirt, tons of prestige, and a recording contract with Sony (just kidding).

All entries must be sent to greasylakeorg@gmail.com. Please include the title of the song, your real name, and your Greasy Lake screen name in the message, as well as names of any additional musicians.

As mentioned, this is the third time we do this. I had actually hoped to do it every year, but it has been an unbelievable five years since our last attempt at this. Not because of lack of quality, but just because of time flying. Just listen to the two winners we've had so far:

Youngstown by Jackie Barnett (2011)

Swallowed Up by JohnF (2012)

I have to say that the other times we've done this, I have been amazed at the talent among us. Not just the winners have been worth listening to. All entries have shown some fine skills and some unique takes on Bruce's music. So with those words, grab your guitars, gather your friends, and get rocking, folking, or whatever style you prefer, as long as it was written by Bruce Springsteen.

Good luck!

PS, It might be a good idea that those of you who plan to participate, post on this thread what song you intend to submit. I mean, it's allowed for two people to submit the same song, but maybe you'd prefer to avoid that.

Declared participants so far:

  • yvan: "Lucky Town"
  • phantomengineer: "Meeting Across the River"
  • Gazza: "Long Walk Home" or "The Rising"
  • Demos: "Leah" or "Down in in the Hole"
  • J: "Independence Day"
  • Tom-Joad: "State Trooper"
  • wolfinthepines: "Night"
  • the calvary: "Human Touch"
  • Andre: "Matamoros Bank"
  • Demos: ?

I remember during the first contest a song was totally sung a capella by a woman, it was fantastic (in y memories), I don't know if it's possible to hear it again

yvan, must have been this one. It was by none other than @pienelien.

Did JohnF win the last one? Ah ... I've just seen the 2 mentioned above. Daskill ... whatever happened to him?

You sure that second one's not JohnF?

Eileen, sorry, you are right. It was JohnF who won last time. Sorry about the mix up. I corrected my original post.

Cool. I did a Nebraska 'tribute' album too, in 2012 I think. Here's a link to it should you have the inclination. I could have a crack at entering a song this year, I'll see if I can think of something.

Based on his avatar and given that I'm certain it's his favourite song, I expect @mad man with a box to present us with an exceptionally flawless rendition of Rosie.

No pressure kid ;)

I have never worked out my own version of Rosie - but I’ll get it together if you, Paolo - the master of polls, king of crusades - give us a full blooded singalong of Waiting On A Sunny Day

(Small Child singing On fifth go round of chorus optional)

As if I could hit those high notes, you kidding me! The best cover you'd get from me is Factory or Fire, and that ain't happening.

That Greasy Lake covers album brings back fond memories I think I had only joined The Lake the year before in 2002, it was a great collection that i remember receiving a copy through the magnificent Traders Forums and trees back in the day.

Is there any chance that an mp3 / downloadable copy be put up as I would love to hear this again.

I remember a stunning and haunting version of atlantic city by a lady vocalist as being one of many standouts!
