Exactly spot on. If we were doing a top 5 song performances from all the archive releases, that Price You Pay would be in mine. One of the absolute treasures from this series

I wouldn't even know where to start with that.

Maybe naming the 5 songs you keep coming back to regularly, and listen to them individually, taking them out of the context of the show?

A random 5 I love to play as one off songs...

Carol - Roxy 75. That Chuck Berry single note then two note guitar riff interlude. Brilliant.

Cover Me - Sockholm 88. That just a kiss away / just a shout away finale.

For Your Love - MSG 88. What a sound check performance and what a song.

Real World - Christic 90. Incredible vocal.

Seeds - Bridge School benefit. Stunning version.

Well that's one way I of starting with it hahaha.

It was difficult enough making fifty playlists of 30 a year ago, but I guess I'd go for:

  1. "Restless Nights" - 2009/11/22 Buffalo, NY
  2. "Drift Away" - 1984/08/20 East Rutherford, NJ
  3. "Zero and Blind Terry" - 2005/11/22 Trenton, NJ
  4. "The Rising" - 2005/08/03 Grand Rapids, MI
  5. "My City of Ruins" - 2006/04/30 New Orleans, LA (I had "Darkness" from 29/12/80 here at first)

I think that's close to being accurate, but doing this has reminded me that there's so many shows and songs I haven't listened to in ages. "Devil's Arcade" from Boston '07, "Highway Patrolman" from Brendan Byrne Night #1 '84, "Be True" from LA '88 etc. Too many gems.

Edit: My head hurts at the thought of having to pass over choosing "The River" from LA '85.

And now I'm thinking whether it would be worth doing a "The Best Song from Every Springsteen Archive Release" blog post. Dammit.

I know that's a "oh nooo don't do that", but the English student interpreter in me does think this could be also be a "oh nooo that will be tough".

Fell free to confirm because I actually started prepping that blog idea last night.

My five regulars. I am weird enough to sometimes listen to any of these songs on repeat, for a substantial amount of time. :)

If I could add the sixth song, it would have been BTR, NY 88.

Brilliant Disguise, Stockholm 88

The Price You Pay, 31.12.80

Highway 29, Belfast 96

Gypsy Biker, St. Louis 08

For You, Roxy 78

Ah right, at least it wasn't an outright 'rebuking' of the idea.

It'll be difficult, but that is part of the fun!

Haha exactly. I imagine it'll be my most subject Springsteen write-up yet, but hopefully that'll urge everyone else to mention what they think the best song on the releases are.

Wow, it’s amazing there aren’t more picks for 8/20/84! To me, it’s doesn’t get much better.... but, that’s what makes this so fun: all of our opinions.

The 84/85 tour was so much fun but they never sounded as good as they did in 1988.

1) 8/20/84

2) LA/88

3) London/81

4) Stockholm/88

5) LA/99

I love this one and even though I don't play it completely as much as I used to, it'll always be one of my Series favourites. I was even playing it in the gym earlier today, that 30 minute sequence from "The Promised Land" to "Thunder Road". I hadn't heard "My Hometown" in ages and it seemed only right to listen to such a meaningful one. And we've talked about it before on here, but man I love this "Darkness on the Edge of Town" so much. Yeah, that fire evident in the versions from '78 - '81 is gone, but I think that's important, because this isn't a show played with fiery rage, it's a show of reflection and acceptance of everything that's brought Bruce and his bandmates to this very moment. The good, the bad and the ugly have all meant something leading into this homecoming and for this very moment Bruce's vocal emphasises that.
