stevie54uk
certainly up there "automatic for the people" is one of my top ten albums
JustDan
I don't know about this. I did read in Rolling Stone where they opined that The Grateful Dead should hold the mantle of "America's greatest band". Based on their musical as well as cultural influence & basically inventing the "Jam Band" genre, I wouldn't have a problem with that assessment.
Tom-Joad
The Band. No doubt about it.

Tough to put The Band in there; even though they wrote extensively about the American condition, 4 of the 5 members were Canadian. Pretty good list, though; I would remove Metallica & G&R at this time (I don't feel they have the "tendrils" of the others), and take out the Dead (I'm prejudiced against random instrumental noodling).

Beach Boys popped to mind, and see you already have them listed. Can't say I'm a huge fan, but for a while they rivaled the Beatles in popularity, and certainly had a huge influence on musical culture. Gabba Gabba Hey!
THUE
Credence is certainly on the list. Pearl Jam could be in the discussion. And yes without question REM is on the list
