It seems almost like a different song with the different lyrics

Well it is indeed another song called The Fast Song (at least that was the title of the song on bootlegs).

Or: how two mediocre 'songs' (more unfinished works-in-progress than real songs), The Fast Song and Candy's Boy, together became one of Bruce Springsteen's greatest songs.

Some apologies, as the song in the OP is not The Fast Song but, as it says, an early demo of Candy's Room; The Fast Song is more (one of) the next versions of the song-in-progress.

Not being an uber geek of songbookdom, I thank those of you that post things like this.  Never knew a song I love so much could be so  . . . bad?

EDIT: Okay, raw, not bad.  Definitely raw.

This version isn't so much bad as it looks like a rehearsal for a demo of a song still in development. Every song ever written will go through this stage. Pretty much unlistenable unless you want some insight into the process of writing a song.

I ve never seen this footage before, its certainly not on the Darkness box set. Definitely a very early version of CR, I quite like it though, the way you can hear the song it became underneath the fumbling and trying out. I like his face at the end .... not looking sure and waiting for feedback..... the great BS & ESB creative process in full swing!!!

BTW who is standing over him at the start of thesong? Is it Landau?

Yes Yes Bruce is reading out of his notebook, singing lyrics he brought to the studio for his co-producer Jon Landau

to hear.

I am dying to know the date of this

It looks exactly like the Record Plant

The take just previous of the Promise is from January 12, 1978

The "Candy's Room" 2 minutes looks like the Record Plant

THAT HAS TO BE WRONG

This is some of the information I have collected

All the outtakes you guys have heard of Candy's Boy and the Fast Song ended on September 2, 1977

According to Sony's logs, the last take of Candy's Boy was on September 2, 1977

According to Sony's logs, the last take of The Fast Song was on September 2, 1977

Three weeks later

On September 27. 1977 Candy's Room made it's first appearance

The first verse of Candy's Boy was spoken by Bruce in it's entirety as Max played his drum build up that had been the beginning of the Fast Somg

The rest of the lyrics I am not sure, but many of the lines come from the second half of the Fast Song

Those guys aim it’ll tear this town down
And blow it into the sea
Man that’s alright with me
‘Cause I don’t care anymore
was heard no more

that was from the most developed takes August 24 and Sept 2, 1977 of the Fast Song

2 lines from Frankie were co-opted, including 'Hidden Worlds that Shine'

don't think they all made it to Candy's Room Darkness version (final segments recorded March 5, 1978),

but there was a 'World of Dreams' outtake of Candy's Room that had them

“Cause in the darkness there’ll be hidden worlds that shine
When I hold Candy close she makes these hidden worlds mine”

===================================

last remarks for now:

pieces of the rest of Candy's Boy showed up in

Prove It All Night was first recorded on September 12, 1977 with some lyrics previously used for Something In the Night.

Clinton Heylin's book says he brought the song to the session on the 14th, essentially finished"

"behind the dynamo" comes from Candy''s Boy.

Sometime after the June-August 1977 takes of DRIVE ALL NIGHT, the following sections from Candy's Boy were added

Well there’s machines and there’s fire
Waiting for us on the edge of town
And there’s some boys for hire
And they’re waitin’ to blow me and Candy down

some of this stuff is well known

going to bed

when was that Candy's Room 1978 demo recorded? NO WAY IT WAS RECORDED 1978   IMHO

There are other major anomalies

Good night
