Sequels and answer songs

Both songs are in my list of the best songs ever written.

Agreed. Yesterday I listened to both back to back again, and the symmetry between them struck me again. The U2 song several times seems to answer back to Indy Day directly at the exact corresponding point in the song.

Apart from what I mentioned in my initial post, the first verse is also striking. In ID, Bruce is finished talking to his dad. Estranged, " ain't no talking gonna change anything now". He's leaving tomorrow, no point discussing it, nothing can be said or done to resolve their differences.

In U2's first verse, it's the exact opposite. "Listen to me now" Bono implores, asking the father to see beyond their differences and allow the son to stand with him and, if needed , for him.

And the emotional ( and musical) highpoint of each song coincides also. In ID, it's the bitter sweet crying sax of Clarence in the bridge. In the U2 song, it's Bono's magnificent "do you hear me when I sing....You're the reason I sing" vocal.

But, yes, both great songs

Bat Out Of Hell spawned two full album sequels; three if you consider Bad For Good to be the original sequel it was intended to be.

Sometimes a sequel just sucks. Like Jaws 2.

Not sure it’s strictly speaking a sequel but Queen’s ‘Bring Back That Leroy Brown’ came a year after Jim Croce’s ‘Bad Bad Leroy Brown’ hit the charts...

That part is just amazing and has moved me to tears more than once. There's a great, great version of it from a Brooklyn Bridge performance.

Bearcat was a response to Hound Dog. I actually bought a copy of this on 7" vinyl at Sun Studios two years ago.
