I don't see any discussion of the film version of the song.

  What does everyone think?

In case you missed this thread - it'll be discussed on there somewhere.

I think I've just created a new world record for listening to this song.

i said it over 40 years ago that Bruce Springsteen is a musically genius

i knew i was right all those years ago and I'm still fuckin' right now..fucking musical genius !

I came in here wondering what people can still be saying about this tune. And this was the first unread quote.

And it was perfect.....just perfect.

I could say what I think but I'm not sure it would go down well.

Anybody else concerned about his voice? Having listened to Rhinestone Cowboy then this has Patti been feeding him bowls of gravel for breakfast?

I'm more concerned about HER voice.

I'm so glad she's not on the studio version.

His voice touches my heart - on both versions but especially this one.

Gary has been saying that since at least 1985

I know Bruce understands what it's like to be Gary

So many words I have used trying to express what you do in a single line. That line of yours is the most beautiful I ever read about Springsteen!

thank you ulfhpersson :)

i just tend to feel Bruce Springsteen music and try not to over think too much

i don't have a degree or any form of higher education so i guess i think like a regular working man (woman) like who populates his songs

i havn't been taught how to think

which doesn't mean i don't over think Bruce Springsteen music ;)

or enjoy the writting and PoV of posters with more know how academically  than me and i learn lots from them and wish i had their education but i really am just one of those people off DOTEOT or the river - they are my people and where i belong

They were high school sweethearts. Would go out to a bar and have a beer then end up in a corner room at the Moonlight Hotel. He left to drive a truck and never returned. She married. He married. They both have kids and bills. He can never go back. Neither can she. But as he drives by he can’t resist returning to the Moonlight Hotel where life was still full of promise and hope. Although he is now single in his lonely bed he realizes that he cannot recapture the past and drinks a final toast to her, their love, their youth and the decayed shell of the place where dreams were still possible.

I googled Christmas Moonlight motel, looking for a pic for my seasonal avatar.

Found this. Apparently there's a movie with the same title, I hope it's not porn. I was afraid to click.

Interesting story. :)

"After losing the love of his life thirty years earlier, a former priest tries to recreate their last happy memory by hiring a prostitute."

My wife truly thought the title was Moo Moo Land Hotel! She sang it that way for quite a while until I eventually had the good grace to correct her. In her defence it does sort of fit in with the phrasing of the song.
Sort of loses it's emotional impact though - I cant' see drinking bourbon in the parking lot of the Moo Moo Land Hotel being anything other than funny.

By the way - love the song (the original I mean, not my wife's version).

I've now got Tammy Wynette singing All Bound For Mu Mu Land going round my head.

Just watching the DVD of the movie.

Look at the start of the song in the movie. Bruce in focus, Patti in this ghostly out of focus blue light behind him.

The motif gets repeated when he starts the last verse of the parking lot toast, although not as distinct in terms of the focus as the first instance.

I agree with those who say as a purely audio experience the album Moonlight Motel is better, but this visual representation is moving beyond belief.

Wow. Musically on the album, Bruce, wow. Then double down and create one of the most emotional music videos ever. Respect.

And, wow,...

A little early in the game for me still Eileen ... But i don't think i'm going overboard calling this my favorite "solo"album. But favorite in a completely different way than i usually enjoy my Bruce .... It makes me sad .... But there is an empathy there for all of us long time fans as we and him all get older.

While there is certainly nothing on this album that will replace Open All Night, Long Time Comin' and Johnny 99 for me this is  much more relatable for me than an album with serial killers all over it.

Not everything has to be relatable.    It just has to be awesome.

My son gets mad at me for that sometimes .... He agrees with you.

But often times something is ‘awesome’ because it’s relatable.  On whatever level.

As my husband always says, “We’re all wired differently,” and I feel that also includes how and why music affects us one way or another.
