There's been much debate and discussion about which Springsteen albums qualify as masterpieces, but what about individual songs. What are some that you consider masterpieces?

Lost In The Flood
Incident On 57th Street
Racing In The Street
The Price You Pay
Jungleland

There are others.

I’m sure my personal complete list is extremely long.  And of course the criteria for ‘masterpiece’ will differ.  But off the top...

-Incident

-Price You Pay

-Backstreets

-Born To Run

-Independence Day

-Thunder Road

-The Ghost of Tom Joad

-My City of Ruins

-Growin’ Up

-Western Stars

-Hunter of Invisible Game

-Long Time Comin’

-Girls in Their Summer Clothes

-The River

-The Promise

-Iceman

I’m sure I’ll think of at least 10 more once I press ‘submit reply.’

An album that is a masterpiece from start to finish... Tough ask. 40 or 50 minutes of perfection from track 1 to the last song is almost impossible.

But a perfect song, a perfect record, that is a true masterpiece? That's a different story. And Bruce has many of those I think.

Thunder Road is the single greatest rock song ever written.  Full stop.  (Even if it isn't always my favorite Bruce song!)

(Nick Hornby has a heck of an essay about it, even though he doesn't exactly think it's the greatest single rock song ever written:  you can read it here.)

One Step Up, Brilliant Disguise come to mind.

I think they’re the amongst the neatest, most effective and truest songs he’s ever written.

Promised Land would definitely feature along with Sandy, Incident, NYCS, both of the “Born....”, Racing and Moonlight Motel.

There’s tons of others.

Incident On 57th Street, Thunder Road, Backstreets, Jungleland, Racing In The Street.

Of course Bruce has written more great and very great songs but these are the songs which can stand up against any other song in the history of popular music.

Yes! And I’d personally add Tougher to that group.

“Tonight the riders on sunset, are smothered in the Santa Ana winds” is certainly a Masterpiece in Seconds.

What a line.

Yes!!!!  That line, along with the music, is just so beautiful.

Also one that chokes me up is “Our American brothers, cross the wire and bring the old ways with them...”

I’m pretty obsessed with this song.

Whilst most of the songs people have mentioned, are amongst my favourites and great songs, personally, I would put Incident, Racing, Thunder Rd, Jungleland, Born To Run and..... Western Stars in the masterpiece category.

Would add Brothers Under The Bridge to the level just below these songs.

I may not have written any masterpieces of song, but I've been known to do some of my best work in 3 minutes or less.

Yes, why can't some of the harder rockers be masterpieces?

1. Roulette

2. MLWNLYD

3. Electric Youngstown

4. Electric Joad.

Your masterpieces can be anything you want them to be!
