I think I'll have to mention Darkness, Born In The U.S.A. and Because The Night as masterpieces. Oh, and Saint In The City and Candy's Room.

A co-written masterpiece then (at least officially).

BTN is a great shout.

I love Saint and also For You but, personally, maybe think they’re just short of masterpieces.

Darkness is one for me. Something In The Night definitely is.

I would add a song that isn't just underrated, but to me is a masterpiece. "Paradise"

Its tough trying to seperate 'masterpiece' from songs that are purely favourites.

To me, a masterpiece is a culmination of nuances, the sum of painstakingly unique brush-strokes. Be they epic or intimate, a masterpiece will challenge and inspire.

The Thunder Road tetralogy - the epic tale of the dream unravelling.

Atlantic City - the beauty and sadness of love grown old.

Jungleland - the menagerie of one wild night

The Rising - the dark and the light of humanity side by side, the brilliant ascent to heaven.

The Price You Pay - one man's struggle against biblical odds.

Born to Run - the runaway energy of a dream in motion, and complexity of the music.

Adam Raised a Cain - nearing the gates of hell to find his father's torment.

That’s absolutely one definition, and it’s one on which I do agree.

But I’ll add that for me it’s also a song that makes you feel something indescribable and deep, in a way no other song does.  It’s also more than just a song you love, or a song that’s your favorite.

Very great song, very underrated, maybe (also) because it is seldom  performed live.

Too many for me to list at this moment.

I always - like this one Steve Van Zandt interview in an old Backstreets, I'm more into songs than albums - usually.

The first song I thought of was Held Up Without A Gun, BTW.

Of course songs like Kitty's Back, NYC - oh this will take forever....

Rosalita is one, so is Incident. Something In The Night's a fucking masterpiece.

The song Darkness On The Edge Of Town - there's so many.

Fuck yeah, Prove It ala '78 style, DJ, total masterpiece! (Atlanta! You need to hear that version again)

I forgot, in my massive list above, The Fever. That's another one to me. What a brilliant, incredible song. And the '78 versions rule.

I have been contemplating this, on what is a masterpiece and what is a brilliant song. For me I have decided to go with the songs which have lines in them which say so much in so few words so, there will be more, but here are my first few:

Racing in the Street - With the eyes of one who hates for just being born (probably my favourite line ever written)

Thunder Road - I know you're hungry for words I ain't spoke (actually, there are several in this one song which fit the bill)

GOTJ - Look in their eyes ma, you'll see me

Western Stars - now there ain't no more, now there's just again

Yeah, but to me at least, it's the music that makes it so amazing, so I give Bruce 10 points here ;) (instead of 12...)

If we go by individual lines I'd add Adam Raised A Cain: "You're born into this life paying for the sins of somebody else's past"

Dead Man Walking

Yes!

Also, Streets of Philadelphia.  The entire song says so much in so few words.  Pick just about any line.

Promised Land would definitely feature

I was going to start a thread about how great this song is. It offten gets over shadowed by Badlands and Racing on that album but I would say it has a shot at being in the top 5 Bruce songs ever. I find I sing it to my self very often, one of the greatest intro lines ever.....

On a rattlesnake highway in the Utah dessert.........

and thats after that freakin harmonica!!!!! and I love this version with the harmonica change....class, in fact I think the guy in the gold stripy top at 4:52 is my alter ego ...thats how I dance during this song!!!:D
