Your top 7 are on the list.  Replace your bottom 3 with Metallica, Radiohead and Pink Floyd.

U2 above the Who & the Stones?.... I dunno about that. Rush....hmm...The thing about Rush is, they were pretty much like a dude band. They didn't have much of a female audience. I went to one of their shows in the 90s. Solid stage show & musicianship but the crowd was...I'd say 85% male....What's rock 'n roll without girls, eh? You gotta have chicks for it to be rock 'n roll ;). Oasis...I remember reading an article about them in Rolling Stone back in the day & how the Beatles were supposed to be a main influence of theirs. Then they quoted George Harrison saying he wasn't all that impressed by them. He thought they weren't very interesting & that he was bored when he listened to one of their songs. I mean, I like Oasis. They've got some good tunes but, in the top ten? I dunno. But that's the thing about individual taste though. Dudn't matter what I think.

I would definitely include the Doors, but I think The Clash, Cream & TP & the Heartbreakers deserve top-10 consideration as well.

I ask this all the time, on these kinds of list. But our your favorites and really The All Time Greatest the same thing?

Because I personally don't like The Stones and The Beach Boys much, but believe they should be on the list.

Big Star, R.E.M.

The Velvet Underground.

The Byrds, maybe? Cream?

And it is about 'rock'. So The Band does not qualify?

Yep. We Geddycorns* are a very rare breed. ^_^ (*Term used for female Rush fans, as in, mythical and/or rarely seen.)

I just saw the Rush movie, Cinema Strangiato. Tom Morello was interviewed in it, along with his wife, who is apparently a huge Rush fan. They made a joke designating her as "Female Rush Fan #45" .

Rush concerts are the only ones I've ever been to where there's no line for the ladies' room.

I was a huge fan in my early teens and saw them several times from about 1980 till 1982. I went totally off them after Grace under Pressure and I hardly ever listened to them again. They remain however the most musically talented rock band I have ever seen or heard.

I'm digging folks respect for REM. Tremendous band and in my top 10. I'll have to ponder 9 more.

There is a difference between top 10 favorite and best I suppose.

For me there's not much of a difference. It's all just opinions anyway. Subjective. Some lists are made from many opinions of course, but it's still subjective. It's still about taste. No right and no wrong and that is wonderful.

I disagree to a point.  Your favorite bands would be strictly subjective choices based on musical taste, generational relevance, and whatever other personal preferences you might have.

Your greatest bands would be somewhat less subjective since it would be based on personal preference and musical taste along with tangibles like record sales, charting records, industry awards, ticket sales, longevity, influence of other great bands, etc.

Steely Dan is a great reference point. Gifted Skilled Musicians, Great Band. But not for everyone. You can hate Steely Dan but you cant deny the greatest of their talent.

If you use that as a guideline. I would say some three man bands are the best.

1. Rush

2. ZZ Top

3. Cream

4. Basically Zeppelin as Plant did play an instrument.

5. The Who same as Daltrey didn't play anything

Steely Dan unquestionably should have made the top ten.

I know these kinds of debates can be never ending... But to me, I don't consider The Beatles or the Beach Boys as rock bands. In a list of the greatest pop bands of all time? Absolutely.

And I think you'd get reasonably universal agreement from most people on the top 3 rock bands... Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and The Who...

All IMHO, of course. :D
