Bruce With Elvis Costello

Recommended Posts

I’m actually going to see Elvis Costello (who’s real name also happens to be Declan) this Thursday in Hershey. Has anyone here seen him live before?

@DeclanskFirst saw him around the time of This Years Model. Yes, I'm that old. Seen him at intervals ever since. Loved the intensity of those early shows. Highlight probably the Get Happy tour show at, of all places, West Calder Regal Suite, just outside Edinburgh. Most recently outdoors at Blenheim Palace last year.

Solo, at Pinkpop 1989, front row.

He played mostly songs of the then new album Spike (could be worse as that is a really good album) and some old favourites including Alison and, as he was in The Netherlands, New Amsterdam.

I was there with a very good friend. It was a very hot day and in the afternoon we stayed in the back of the field to do mostly nothing. In the late afternoon we managed to get more to the front and finally got front row just before John Hiatts show.

Seeing John Hiatt, Marc Almond, Elvis Costello and R.E.M. front row...very nice.:)

(And the Pixies too!:) But earlier in the day, not front row).

I have tickets to his Cincy show next month.  Really looking forward to it.

Saw him at the same Cincy theater about 5 or 6 years ago, and I loved it.  His voice was amazing and his backlog of songs to choose from kept it exciting.  Even the lesser known songs were great to listen to.  I would highly recommend seeing him.

Like Lampi, I first saw him during the Spike tour in 1989 at Merriweather Post Pavillion.   Long time ago, and I was kind of far back...but remember a lot of Spike songs and not a lot from his first few albums.   Hard to believe that was thirty years ago.

Almost as many times as I have seen Bruce! Although mostly many years ago when I really thought he was great. I went off him for a few years, but I think he has been back on form recently. Hope you enjoy it.

I’ll let you know how it is. What’s your favorite album?

I saw Elvis at the City Hall, Toon - great show.

I love Oliver's Army, Veronica etc but this is the video I watch quite regularly. Ooooo, the faces he makes … not a happy bunny! I'm also a McGuinn fan.

I'm not  a huge Costello fan but I saw him on his tour with Allen Toussaint. 2007, I think. The setting was superb : the ancient Roman theatre in my hometown of Lyon, France, with a wide view upon the city at night behind the stage. It was really a great show, a brillaint mixture of their two universes, with a fantastic band to back them up. I have a few Costello albums at home, but I have always had a problem with his voice. A remarkable artist all the same.

I saw him most recently at the first show he did after his health scare, last November in Bethlehem PA Sands Casino. For a first night of a tour, after a layoff due to his health, he was in great form. I am sure he has only gotten better. Saw him on the tour he did around the Imperial Bedroom album a few years back, that was really good. Been a fan of his, well, as long as Bruce, first seeing him on the forgettable Goodbye Cruel World, back in 1984 at the then nice and perfectly named Garden State Arts Center, right on the Garden State Parkway.

Best later album that I will actually still listen to, All this Useless Beauty. Best early album, either Armed Forces or Trust.

When he and Bruce played together on the Grammy show right after Joe Strummer died, I thought that was my dream come true, my two favs sharing a microphone, then I remembered they did that on the Roy Orbison Black and White night back in 1987.

The Spectacle series in general that Costello did was tremendous, Elvis is on par or a better story teller than Bruce, and you cant help but love the English wit.

For a real hoot, YouTube the Elvis Costello/Tom Snyder interview from 1981 and some songs they do that night, early witty EC at his best.
