Bar the obvious .... Bruce's best lyrics

Recommended Posts

Now honey I don't wanna clip your wings
But a time comes when two people should think of these things
Having a home and a family
Facing up to their responsibilities

They say in the end true love prevails
But in the end true love can't be some fairytale
To say I'll make your dreams come true would be wrong
But maybe darling I could help them along

Ohhh, my daddy said right before he died
That true true love was just a lie
He went to his grave a broken heart
An unfulfilled life girl makes a man hard

Oh darling, there's something happy and there's something sad
'Bout wanting somebody oh so bad
I wear my love darling without shame
I'd be proud if you would wear my name

I Wanna Marry You  to most is a throwaway song just before The River on the album. But listening to one of the 2016 concerts revently, I really concentrated on the lyrics and they are just perfect.....

Wreck On The Highway & Stolen Car are such under-rated masterpieces in every respect.

Maybe not anymore since The River 2016 Tour. And other 'deeper cuts' from The River album too.

Some of my all time favourites i keep coming back to time and time again

Summer drought come hard that year
Our herd grazed the land so bare
Me and my dad had to blowtorch the thorns off the prickly pear
And mother, your hand slipped from my hair

I threw my robe on in the morning
Watched the ring on the stove turn to red
Stared hypnotized into a cup of coffee
Pulled on my boots and made the bed
Screen door hangin' off its hinges
Kept bangin' me awake all night
As I look out the window
The only thing in sight

Now down below and pullin' on my shirt
I got some kids of my own
Well if I had one wish in this god forsaken world, kids
It'd be that your mistakes would be your own
Yea your sins would be your own

She said we could just sleep together
There'd be nothing wrong
We could just hold each other with our clothes on
I went to answer, I don't think we should
Then I heard a voice say, yeah, I guess we could
She kissed me lightly and said you know sometimes when you're down

It's the little things that count

I wrote some of these song lyrics on a card that I sent to my then girlfriend, with a big bouquet of flowers back in 1982.

big sop that I am.

We will be married 37 years in October.
she is now a Springsteen fan too: although Brilliant disguise is one of faves, don’t know if that makes me uneasy a tad:blink:

My spouse and I had "Brilliant disguise" and Metallica's "Creeping death" as our songs back when we were dating...Things worked out just fine. :-) Congrats on 37 years!

Off top of my head (some of these songs have already been mentioned and some of them may be more obvious than others but...)

The Ghost of Tom Joad

Independence Day

The Hitter

The Price You Pay

Moonlight Motel

Devils & Dust

The Wrestler

Black Cowboys

I could also list The Promise, None But the Brave, Shut Out the Light etc.

Lol.

the song we hooked up to was OMD’s England’s Gay.

Can’t beat a nice electronic pop tune allied to sone lyrics of mass destruction:o.
such was the way of mating couples back in the day.

When the bed you lie on is nails and rust

When the love you've given's turn to ashes and dust

When the hope you've gathered's drifted to the wind

It's you and I now, friend

You and I now, friend

Here where our memory lay corrupted and our city lay dry

Let me make this vow to you:

Here where it's blood for blood

And an eye for an eye

Let me show you what love can do

Let me show you what love can do

His best lyrics?

I like Darkness On The Edge Of Town a lot; also the lyrics to Adam Raised A Cain, Something In The Night, The Promised Land, Streets Of Fire...

The Iceman (the line "once they tried to steal my heart, beat it out of my head" describes growing up for me).....

I love the line in Racing In The Street "she stares off alone into the night with the eyes of one who hates for just bein' born"

I like some of the lines in The Promise a lot:

Inside I felt like I was carrying the broken spirits of all the other ones who lost
When the promise is broken you go on living, but it steals something from down in your soul
Like when the truth is spoken and it don't make no difference, something in your heart turns cold.

Oh and the line in the early version of Something In The Night

"She was looking for some place to go to die or be redeemed."

And Roulette.

Edit: I also love some of the lyrics to Lonesome Day.

"let kingdom come, I'm gonna find my way/through this lonesome day"

one could argue not his best lyrics in that song, but it's helped me sometimes....

Now you were the Red Sea I was Moses
I kissed you and slipped into a bed of roses
The waters parted and love rushed inside
I was Jesus' son sanctified

Tonight the moon's looking young but I'm feelin' younger
'Neath a veil of dreams sweet blessings rain
Honey I can feel the first breeze of summer
And in your love I'm born again
