SoulBoogieAlex
Looking to improve the social contract isn’t socialism. It is working toward a society where we all contribute a fair share and every citizen gets a fair shake. We discussed taxes earlier, this video shows why it might not be a strange idea to ask billionaires to pay their fair share in taxes. 2

You should have been able to read the comments on our social media. I would have gladly translated the best ones, but would only get this thread locked. I think her image in front of all those American flags dressed as Helga from Allo Allo will go into history. That said, I know she expresses herself through immaculate outfits, usually very appropriate for the occasion. This outfit was loud, she must really hate him. why so hateful? Eileen
I wasn't surprised by her style of dress - hasn't she worn military-type clothing a few times? I thought she looked great.

JoanFontaine
I thought she looked great. Somber - fitting our times. I see the connection to a uniform, and that's fine. We can't know if she's fighting for our country, fighting for her husband - or maybe given her speech, fighting to define her place in history. We will never know. A British designer owned by a French conglomerate - that part of her suit needs no explanation.
JoanFontaine
And, stating the obvious, this has strayed very far from the original topic. So let's get back to that please. And thanks to (almost) everyone who has kept this a respectful conversation.

Daisey Jeep
i don't know squat about fashion but the military often inspires fashion, certainly if you look at ladies fashions in the 40s they look very military inspired. in the 80s Diana did it

Eileen
I had a green - emerald green, not olive/khaki, trouser suit - when I was about 15. Really short double breasted jacket, wide-bottomed trousers. I ditched the trousers and just used the jacket ... just about covered my backside. Hey it was the 60s. This is not a new style - it's worn by lots of people. She wanted to make an entrance and look strong ... job done.

THUE
Melanie Trump preaches for others to do all of the things her husband does not. The fact that her platform is social media bullying is laughable. Who cares how you look, it's what you do or say. Bruce's hair is terrible but I'm glad he used his song to make a statement. 5

Melania has a somewhat unconventional taste in clothes, but a statement? what is the statement? …. and what good is the statement if it is so subtle that no one knows what it is? Anyway, I don't know who Helga is but I'm guessing the comparison is not complimentary …. and the reference to the "best" comments on social media, that I can only assume is vulgarity or mysogyny, seems gratuitous to me …. so I asked why. I'm convinced the relationship was "transactional" from the get go, but the presidency put the kibosh on the amicable (and doubtless fairly lucrative) de-coupling. She's now tied to him for as long as he's in the White House, I'd imagine a year or so on from his exit they'll quietly part, she'll be left secure enough financially, he'll find a younger model for another transactional relationship.

I shortened. I'm not allowed to post what I believe is the truth, because it would have been acknowledged as hateful speech. Rules. I think you misunderstood me. I think she is by far the most elegant and good looking First Lady, with extremely good taste in clothing. There are numerous articles on the internet exploiting the idea how her outfits can be understood as non verbal statements. Please, check if you're truly interested. Meet Helga. We always need humor. Each episode of that epic show is worth seeing. Yes, some good comments on our social media were definitely vulgar and misogynistic, but the best ones were really patriotic, something like this... Imagine what a great small nation we are, so that our native, a failed student and a model, ends up as FLOTUS, and her speech at the RNC is probably the best one the Republicans are going to hear during this campaign.
