What is your Bruce top 10?

Recommended Posts

In no particular order...the ten songs that IMO best define Bruce and his facets as a songwriter.

Jungleland (for the romanticism)

Badlands (for facing reality...and making the best of it)

Ghost of Tom Joad (acoustic) (for taking a stand)

The Rising (for a rousing anthem and his status as a cultural icon)

Moonlight Motel (for his reflectiveness and poetic brilliance)

Valentine's Day (for his degree of introspection)

Dancing in the Dark (for his mass appeal in conjunction with excellent lyrics)

My Father's House (for the songwriting)

American Skin (for his relevance)

The River (for the storytelling)

Reminds me of the joke doing the rounds during the Apocalypse,

Sat in my garden with my wife during lockdown.  She told me that if I was bored I should make a bird table.

So I did.

She was furious when she found out that I'd only put her in fourth place.

The top three rotate depending on mood and state of mind:

1 Racing in the Street (long version)
The 2009 Paramount Theater is "the" version

2 Downbound Train
I have to say I now prefer the 2013 BITUSA Live performance that's more guitar than synth based

3 Tougher Than The Rest
Live or Studio this song is a powerhouse

4 Incident on 57th Street (live)

5 The River

6 Promised Land

7 Independence Day

8 Lucky Town

9 Two Faces

10 Janey Don't Lose Heart

1. New York City Serenade

2. Tenth Avenue-Freeze Out

3. Backstreets

4. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)

5.  Badlands

6. Drive All Night

7.  Thunder Road

8. Thundercrack

9.  Streets of Fire

10. Frankie

It really is ever changing outside of the top 4. NYC Serenade is what truly got me into Bruce. That first time hearing that song so many years ago made me know why this guy was The Boss. Glad I FINALLY got to hear it live on his last tour and for the first time since the 70s he played it here in DC.

The exact placings may change a little, but my number one never will.

1. Racing In The Street

2. Cautious Man

3. Prove It All Night

4. One Step Up

5. Atlantic City

6. My Hometown

7. Secret Garden

8. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out

9. Moonlight Motel

10. New York City Serenade

It hurts that Backstreets, Brilliant Disguise and Candy’s Room didn’t quite make the cut. So difficult.

Top ten? Not sure I can do this

1) New York City Serenade (see, it always changes)

2) Something In The Night

3) The Promise (live 1976 solo piano versions)

4) Kitty's Back

5) Adam Raised A Cain

6) Rosalita

7) Where The Bands Are

8) Incident On 57th Street

9) Frankie (live 1976 versions)

10) The Fever

not in that order and I know I'm forgetting many

I'd need a top 20 and to be less tired to do this better

Edit: Atlantic City would have to be in there

and maybe State Trooper too

edit #2 - and STREETS of FIRE!

and the '78 Prove It All Night

yeah I'd need a top 20

Dancing In The Dark
Dead Man Walking
Girls in Their Summer Clothes
Human Touch
Land Of Hope And Dreams
Long Walk Home
My Love Will Not Let You Down
No Surrender
