stillilllife
What is the best outtake song from each album session in your opinion? Obviously each session that has outtakes you've heard that is.
fadeaway
My gut says Stray Bullet from the River or Rockaway the Days from USA. Or if you mean released songs - Backstreets with strings or Born To Run with the dual vocals.

Lampi
Using Brucebase as reference point, and not thinking too long. Please note that Brucebase has the tabs 'released' and 'unreleased' for non-album songs. Greetings: none. All not-so-great Dylan imitations, reason why they really choose the best songs from that era for inclusion on Greetings, including Mary Queen and The Angel. WIESS: Song For Orphans. Also because of the first thought, Thundercrack, is great live, the studio version is a bit disappointing compared to live versions. Born To Run: Walking In The Street (Lovers In The Cold). Darkness: The Promise (what else?). The River: Roulette (honourable mention for Take 'Em As They Come and Be True). Nebraska: Johnny Bye Bye. BUSA: Janey Don't You Lose Heart. Tunnel: Two For The Road. Human Touch: 30 Days Out. Lucky Town: none. (According to Brucebase, the only LT outtake was Happy, and I really do not like that song). Greatest Hits: Missing (a criminally underrated song). Joad: Dead Man Walking. The Rising: Harry's Place. Devils & Dust: none. (Again only known outtake, the not-so-great The Little Things That Count). After that, it becomes somewhat confusing-like: Long Walk Home is clearly the best outtake from Seeger Sessions, but it was officially released on Magic, so would a little bit strange to mention it. A honourable mention for Frankie, a song recorded for various albums, and one of Bruce Springsteen's greatest outtakes. Scrolling though those lists gives again the notion Bruce Springsteen threw many (very) great songs away (sometimes gave away to others, or on a B-side or on a future album), but also that many songs were outtakes for a very good reason: because they were not good songs.
robk1
Great topic....I really need to think about this one.
MacBruce
Greetings; Winter song...at least I think this was Greetings outtake. It's brilliant anyway and should have been on an official album. WIESS: Thundercrack Born to Run; Lonely night in the park Darkness; The Promise / The Way The River; Roulette Nebraska; Sugarland Born in the USA: None but the Brave Tunnel of Love: Two for the road Human Touch/ Lucky Town; Happy The Ghost of Tom Joad; Dead Man Walking The Rising; Down in the Hole Devils and Dust; No outtakes as far as I understand. Magic; See above WOAD: See above:Â Wrecking Ball; See above: Western Stars; Apparently he wrote about 30 songs for this album so who knows we may yet hear some in the future. Letter to you; Don't think there were any outtakes for this.

Brucebase lists it as both a Rising and Magic outtake, with the origins of the song maybe dating back to late 90s. Apparently lyrics were written first (late 90s-early 2000's) and music was only fully developed during Magic sessions.

Such a shame, as it is a really beautiful, poetic song (but it would not have fit on Born To Run also).
