The Middle... Bruce in a Superbowl commercial

Recommended Posts

The problem with 'the Middle' is that 'the Middle' in America is 'the Right' everywhere else in the world throughout the entire human History of the last 200 years.

This is supposed to be my fucking electric Nebraska

This is very sad and very disappointing. I hope he at least donates the money (assuming he got paid to do that) to some charity cause. Yes it's fine cinematography and I'm sure he means all the things

I came to this topic expecting some debate on Bruce doing a commercial. I wasn't expecting a debate on the resale value of Jeeps. Gotta love Greasy Lake.

That's exactly what I thought! Bruce is such a right winger!

Bruce is of course not a right-winger but recently it seems he 's rapidly becoming a political Polyanna with a peculiar fetish about 'centrism' of any kind and on any issue. Not the same Bruce he was 5 or 10 years ago.

10 years ago, it was a very staunch stance on we are alone and need to fend for ourselves.

you just said, The Middle is Right Wing, Bruce asked us all to meet in the middle, which make him Right Wing. Matter as fact would make us all right wing.

Correct, I think it is very interesting with how all these views correlate to different parties, because this was not always the case

You can’t necessarily take Bruce at his word though. He also used to talk about allowing not allowing himself to be co-opted for a political cause. That clearly was not something he believed in.

I find it a bit off-putting that Bruce believes “the middle” is a White Christian Church.  Not everyone in America worships in church and Bruce seems to forget that fact.

Surely they could have found some nearby trees or some other non religious area to symbolize America’s common ground.

Pretentious, like a lot of his posturing around the release of WS. He isn't the elder statesman that he thinks he is, for which I lay some of the blame at the feet of Zimny, Alleoli, Clinch and Landau. He's always been a loyal Boss but I feel it all needs a shake up.

I'm one pretentious video featuring close ups of Bruce's serious-pouting face set to a navel-gazing rambling monologue and B-roll drone footage of a canyon away from throwing away all of my Bruce CD's.

We're fortunate.  Imagine how pouty he'd be if Trump had won

And why was he lighting that candle? We may never know.

You must not have grown up in the Catholic Church! Hah. It's used in a church for a special prayer. I know candles are also used in the Greek Orthodox Church not sure about any others though.

Eh. If this counts as selling out, he's sold out before, to varying degrees. The ad doesn't bother me, and it certainly doesn't make me want to run out and buy myself a jeep.

But I guess I wish it made me feel something inside, something hopeful or proud or something. I'm not sure that telling a divided nation that "we need the middle" is going to somehow unify us by nudging people further to the right or the left towards the center.

Have a huge problem with Bruce's involvement in this project, even though I am not "on the right" for US politics.  The country is deeply divided, and 1/2 the population believes what they believe.  Having a figure that obviously supports the left (in Bruce) advocate for the re-uniting the country, so soon after the painful election--comes across as talking down to that portion of the population and "rubbing it in their faces".    Not the ideal timing for this message/commercial, when feelings are still very raw.  Will hurt Bruce's image, more than it helps--but when has the man ever cared about that (which is why I love him):)

The more I think about it, the more the religious element bothers me. It is somewhat alienating to me as an atheist.

This take us spot on. It’s not the premise the advertisement takes that is the problem. It’s the one presenting the premise. Everybody bitches about the side that has power when it’s not their side, then calls for unity when their side has the power.

I on the other hand have a significant problem with the notion of meeting in the middle with a significant number of people who, if not outright fascists, bigots, white nationalists, insurrectionists, conspiracy theorists and bullies, at least do not seem willing to denounce that element of people with whom they apparently share other common positions.

Lots more people would have paid attention if it was Taylor Swift in that commercial because she has more relevance, today.

Would she have been daft enough to have done it?

There is a massive disconnect across the Atlantic about who or what is perceived as left or right.

One small example. Boris Johnson was Trump's  best mate and I imagine would thus be seen in the US as sufficiently right of centre. But Boris forced Brexit through by championing a free health service, the NHS (health not even an EU competence, he was just pushing patriotic buttons and it worked). The NHS would be the ultimate nightmare of the American middle never mind the US right, being actual socialism in action. Health care free of at the point of delivery, free, doctor's  visits, free hospitalisation, no money or insurance required. But the leader of a right wing party in the UK adores it and wouldn't get elected if he opposed it. Biden, who passes as left wing in the US would not get near the ballot if he proposed a free health service.

Just think of all the chaos that could have been avoided if Bruce would have just done this commercial 4 years ago!

1. No (2) Impeachments

2. No Antifa

3. No "insurrection"

4. No need for this years commercial.
