I Will Dare

Wasted in the heat

Recommended Posts

Anybody hear this? I just d/l'ed it from iTunes. There's a fookin' mandolin on I Will Dare. I swear I couldn't hear that on my old vinyl copy....although my old POS Technics turntable prolly didn't help.

I have mixed emotions about this, IMO LIB is a lo-fi masterpiece. Hearing it in crisp digital sound adds a new dimension, but it seems to take away some of the crunch from the music. Anyway, I know there are a few Mats fans hear at the Lake. You guys oughta check it out.

Oh, yeah it's on there, mandolins a struming! I hear what your saying "lo fi masterpiece" but I always go for the remaster of anything. However, with the Mats I first thought WHY? They were not great players to start with and thats what made them so great. I still remember the first time I heard Unsatisfied. I thought, holy shit, what is this? I knew the guy singing that song was singing from someplace way down, the bottom, a real emtional low point. And Paul's voice at the end of that song, man, I still scream along with him when I play it.

Yeah I picked up the remaster. Had to!

BTW, LIB is easily one of the top 3 LPs of the 80's

Agreed. Unsatisfied, Answering Machine, Sixteen Blue are all excellent songs...even Kiss' Black Diamond is pretty good. I think I read somewhere that a boxset is supposed to be released sometime. The 80's where a great time for Minneapolis bands in addition to the Replacements, there was Husker Du, Soul Asylum, The Magnolias, The Gear Daddies, and The Jayhawks.

I saw the 'Mats at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1987. They played in a big ballroom at the Student Center, no seats. I remember the alot of pushing and shoving during IOU and Color Me Impressed. It was an amazing show (everybody in the band was sober for the most part). They played a great version of Gimme Shelter to close the show. A band named Firetown (w/Butch Vig) opened the show, I think most of the members went on to form Garbage.

Its always a toss up for me whether I like this one or Tim better. Also, one of the all time great covers, IMO.

That's a tough choice. Tim was loaded with great songs too. Little Mascara may be my all time favorite song.

Tim is great.

But I came to the Replacements late. So I love Don't Tell a Soul and All Shook Down, too.

And nobody likes All Shook Down.

But I think The Last is the greatest song about addiction ever written.

All Shook Down has some beautiful songs....one of my favorites

From the very first day that you were born
to the very last time you waved and honked your horn
had no chance at all to watch you grow
up so sadly, beautiful
up so sadly, beautiful

Baby needs a brand new pair of eyes
cause the ones you got now see only goodbyes
had no chance at all to let you know
oh so sadly, beautiful
sadly, beautiful

Well you got your father's hair
and you got your father's nose
but you got my soul
sadly, beautiful

From the very last time you waved and honked your horn
to a face that turned away pale and worn
had no chance at all to let you know
you left me sadly, beautiful
left me sadly, beautiful
Sadly, beautiful
so sadly
so sadly

OK, you have to bring up TIM! If I ever guest DJ on the radio somewhere this is the first song and intro I'll tell:
"All right folks, it's 1985 and your in a small smoke filled bar with about 10 to 15 people in the whole place. The place is a dump and you’re about to split when you notice that the four assholes that were making a racket at the bar are heading up to the stage. The lead singer looks like he weighs about 80 lbs. wet and he’s shit-faced drunk as he makes his way to the mike. The other band members are laughing at the singer and your not sure if you should leave before this train wreck of a band completely ruins your night. But there is something about them? Your buddy nudges you and heads for the door but you tell him to hold on. The singer steps to the mike and says "Were The Replacements, and we suck!" as he crashes down on a E chord he kicks an empty Bud bottle off the stage all the way to back of the bar. You’re transfixed, awed and smiling and it’s only the first song"

Queue Left Of The Dial from Tim and wait for the phones to start ringing.

S2S, I love DTAS and ASD as well. Achin' To Be may well be my all time favorite Replacements tune. "Thought about, not understood, she's achin' to be (just like me)." That song spoke to me in a more personal way than anything other that Bruce.

ed62..., great song intro. Funny, as I was walking around my neighborhood last night listening to LIB on my Ipod I was thinking I could almost smell the Tanqueray on Westerberg's breath as he spit out the words to Gary's Got a Boner.

big fan of LIB but lately have been playing hootenany a lot. still have the first 5 on vinyl. and the cover of LIB is a materpiece IMO.

Top 10 Paul Westerberg Proverbs (mats era), according to SPIN's Alternative Record Guide:

"Meet me any place or anywhere at any time now I don't care/Meet me tonight/If you will dare, I will dare." I Will Dare (Let It Be, 1984)

"Lonely, I guess that's where I'm from." I'll Be You (Don't Tell A Soul, 1989)

"Bring your own lampshade/Somewhere there's a party."Swinging Party (Tim, 1985)

"I hate music/It's got too many notes."I Hate Music (Sorry Ma, I Forgot to Take Out the Trash, 1981)

"I'll give you my jacket if you give me your glamour/Gimme that racket, gimme that clamor." Gimme Noise (Stink, 1982)

"It beats picking cotton and waiting to be forgotten." Bastards of Young (Tim, 1985)

"You wish upon a star that turns into a plane."Valentine (Pleased To Meet Me, 1987)

"I ain't very good but I get practice by myself/Forgot my one line so I just said what I felt."If Only You Were Lonely (B-side to "I'm in Trouble", 1981)

"Used to live at home/Now I stay at the house."Here Comes A Regular (Tim, 1985)

"Yesterday's trash/Too bored to thrash."Treatment Bound (Hootenanny, 1983)

not on LIB but a classic....

TREATMENT BOUND

We're gettin' no place fast as we can
Get a noseful from our so-called friends

We're gettin' nowhere quick as we know how
We whirl from town to town treatment bound

First thing we do when we finally pull up
Get shitface drunk try to sober up

There'll be no pose tonight no money in sight
Label wants a hit and we don't give a shit

Cuz where gettin' no place as fast as we can
We get a noseful from our so-called friends

We're gettin' nowhere quick as we know how
We whirl from town to town Duluth to Madison
Treatment bound

Gettin' nowhere

(keep goin')

Second thing we do is walk around
Goto the job or try to hold one down

There's no mass appeal carton's asleep at the wheel
Yesterday's trash too bored to thrash

We're gettin' nowhere fast as we can
We got a noseful of them so-called friends

We're gettin no place as quick as we know how
We're gettin' nowhere what will we do now?

Take it, Scotty

Tommy: one of the chords at that one part you just fucked it up
Paul: fucked 'im up

The ones who love us best are the ones will lay to rest and visit there graves at holidays at best.
The one who love us least are the ones will die to please.
If it's any consolation I don't even understand it.

I second the sentiment re: "Little Mascara". What a song! I remember that coming on a mixed tape a buddy had sent with me when I made a trip to India in the 80s. From the first note I was hooked. He had put the Clash's "Career Oppurtunities" just following it. "Heaven be praised for rock 'n' roll!" I thought as I rattled along on a train ride through the subcontinent.

The next one's always gonna last for always
The next one's always on me

Would it help to fall in love a little slower
I know it hurts at any speed
So you have another drink
And get down on your knees
You been swearing to God
Now maybe if you'd ask
That this one be your last
Cause this one child is killing you
This one's your last chance
to make this last one really the last

And for something completely different:

Kiss me on the bus
If you knew how I felt now
You wouldn't act so adult now
Hurry, hurry, here comes my stop

I used to think he said "here comes my stuff." Bad memories...

Anybody remember their appearance on SNL. They did Bastards of Young and Kiss Me on the Bus. I have a VHS of it somewhere. Wish that performance would find its way to DVD somehow.

i thought it was stuff too. time to put all the mats stuff on my ipod. here comes a regular is a tune i could listen to 5-6 times in a row.

paul's solo stuff is amazing as well - the first two releases particularly.

You don't blow like the breeze you were born to be
You die down in the trees and try to hide
Will you witness the dark
All you need is a spark
A cathedral of torches to light the night

On your mark here I am
I'm your spark
Runaway wind
Run run away wind

You trade your telescope for a keyhole
Make way for the gray that's in your brown
As dreams make way for plans
See ya watch life from the stands
Come on I'll help you burn 'em to the ground

On your mark here I am
I'm your spark
Runaway wind

He sees ya like a river
Deep and silent
And he runs to you like
A shallow noisy stream
I see what you've become and try to hide it
You need someone who sees
What you were born to be

Here I am

You don't. blow like the breeze
You were born to be
You don't know what to do with your life
As day returns to dark
Flame returns to spark
Come on I feel I'm blowing out tonight

I'm your spark here I am
I'm your spark here I am
I'm your spark here I am
On your mark run away wind
Watch you run
Watch you run
Watch you run

Seeing Paul do "Things" at a now-defunct Philly club (the Chestnut Cabaret) is one of my favorite musical memories.

Things I wanna tell you
How you make me feel
How you look to me
And how good it feels
Things I don't wanna tell you
Every little thing's all right
What I was before
And where I was last night

Always things
All these things
Always things

Things I try to tell you but come out oh so wrong
Seem to feel pretty good, don't seem to last very long
Things I don't wanna tell you
Now there ain't no doubt
You lit a fire in me
Can't seem to put out

Always things
All these things

Things I long to tell you, but I don't know how
Things I don't wanna tell you, but I have to now
Packed my things

Things I'm bound to tell you like that dress looks great on ya
I could use some breathing room but I'm still in love with you
Things I'd never tell you
down the line someday
You'll be a song I sing
A thing I give away
Pack my things today
I packed my things today
