High Up On The Shelf

Recommended Posts

I hope you guys don't mind me opening a separate thread on this topic here. I would like to use it as a forum for all kinds of related updates, questions, opinions, suggestions and, of course, requests for specific illustration material I still need. I consider "the book" very much a community effort many of you have already contributed to in a big way, and I know I can count on your continuing support, which is highly valued and much appreciated. During the course of this weekend, I will post a "status quo" here to let you all know where the project currently stands, and what I'm planning to do with it over the next few months, so stay tuned. ;)

OK, so for everybody out there who's interested in this thing, here's the lowdown:

Although I'm still fiddling around with the text on an almost daily basis, I consider the main discography almost finished; apart from the rarity ratings (on a scale from 1 to 10) which I plan to fully revise until the end of this year. I probably will need some help from you guys with those.

The current script for the discography alone runs over 99 MS Word pages with close to 37,000 words in font size 10. In addition, I also have planned a label guide, a section that is dedicated to the background of some of the photos found on international picture sleeves, and maybe one or two other appendices. If you have any suggestions in this regard, please feel free to post them here. Since this is "for you", what else would you as collectors like to see in such a book?

Apart from pictures, pictures and even more pictures, obviously. ;) Well, I have some good news here: Courtesy of several major collectors (including many from this forum), I now have about 400 hi-res scans of sleeves, labels and other stuff handy for potential use in the book - not counting items from my own collection. Thankfully, Mike recently also has agreed to share his awesome and vast 7" archive for the project, so there will be numerous interesting additions in the near future, with pretty much all of the top rarities on the format covered in the end. Those who have followed my related posts in the original collectors' thread know that I also plan to include pictures of sheet music, promo ads and all kinds of memorabilia to complement the illustrations of the records themselves.

Now comes the hardest part: Actually having this thing printed and published. I have recently looked into the possibility of publishing the book "privately" - however, to have it done the way I want it done, printing costs would be outlandish. I'm not planning to make a buck on this, but I don't want to get into debt for it either. Josef (schrefel) has pointed me to an interesting website where entire books can be designed online, and customers then can order printed copies of it directly from there. This is an option I'm looking into, although the design is obviously very time-consuming and I really haven't done anything with it yet. Simultaneously, a fellow Viennese Bruce fan who is in the printing business and also happens to be very talented when it comes to graphic techniques, has kindly agreed to support me with the layout, which of course will be hard work and take a lot of time as well, but if we can make it, I'd ultimately have a fully finished and ready-to-print concept in PDF format that could be pitched to potential publishers. Whatever route eventually will be taken, there probably is no way I'll have any of it done before the end of 2011 or so (at the earliest).

So, summing things up, and as I've said before, there still is a long way to go with this project. In any event, I would like to once again express my heartfelt thanks to all of you who so far have contributed to it - the collectors' thread was absolutely vital in correcting, expanding and improving the discography, so if and when the book happens, consider yourselves co-authors.

Not much of a collector myself, but this sounds extremely exciting. I don't know if I can be of any help, but I'll be very interested in the result.

HI Peter
The book sounds a great idea i love Bruce and this sounds super. I alway wanted book like this on him, i seen a book the Pet Shop Boys did a few years ago called Catalogue which cover every record, ad and poster, what about taking order from us fans on this site, that would give you some idea of many would buy it.

Hope you can get the book out, looks very promising!

I've been around here a few months now, and it's very exciting, meeting all these collectors online.
Would be very nice if there is coming a book of all these beautifull Bruce collectors items!

Good luck on the book my friend!

Hi Peter, It's clear for us that you can get broke for editing the book.

I feel we could help you to finance the project with Pre-Orders, or even with "contribution buyers" who agree to pay an extra to help you publishing the book.

Do you have already a budget?

Domingo.

I totally agree. Many of us here are high-level collectors and sometimes we pay 4-digit figures for a single item. I myself won't think twice if I am to chose between contributing finantially (and non financially) and not having the book in hands.

If this makes you feel more confortable, when someone contributes with amount 'X' and if the book sells well, you cover your initial costs, and you make 'X' or more extra, then you can return amount 'X' (minus the price of the copy puchased) to the contributor.

If this book sees the light of day (in printed format that is), we will feel as proud as you will... that's for sure.

Just my two cents.

If you already decided not to include the 12" format (singles and EPs only), then you could still add a 12" discography appendix, no rating, no detailed info, no illustrations (expect for notable items maybe). We can start a new thread dedicated to compiling such a list, and we see where that goes....

I think a well done help is always a good thing.

Thanks for your comments, everybody. While I sincerely appreciate your offers to help in this regard, I think it is way too early to think about how to finance the printing, or even to take "pre-orders" for the book, as it is still an "unlaid egg" at this point. The script and layout have to be fully finished first, and as I already said, especially the layout process is something that is going to take a while to complete. So let's do it step by step, OK? ;) Who knows; once I have something I can show around other than an MS Word File and hundreds of "loose" scans there actually may be a way to get the book professionally published. If everything else fails, however, I'll certainly consider the different "DIY" variants in earnest. Either way, thanks again for all your input and support.

Eddy, as for your suggestion re. a 12" listing, I guess I have to think about that, but I'd really prefer to stick strictly to the 7" format here.
