I had heard only "Born to Run" and "Rosalita", I had seen the Time and Newsweek covers, and was turned off by all the hype. I wasn't expecting much. I actually worked security for the concert, and stood at one of the gym exit doors for the show.

In hindsight, I'm glad that I had no choice but to stand for the show. I experienced that night no less than a life-changing event. No musical performance had ever reached into me and grabbed my heart and soul the way Bruce and the band did that night. I didn't know most of the songs, but I loved every one of them. I remember the concert starting with Bruce in a spotlight singing "Thunder Road", with more emotion than I had ever seen from any other singer, accompanied only by piano. Then the band broke into "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out", and I found myself dancing and singing along to words I didn't know. Two hours later, when it all ended with a joyous "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", I was emotionally drained and physically exhausted. I was so completely overwhelmed that it took me days and weeks to come down from that high.

That was 29 years ago this December. Bruce is still my favorite performer, especially when he is with the E Street Band. I have seen a total of 8 concerts, all of which were great, but none will ever top that very first one. That night stands at the top of the list of my personal experiences, right behind the birth of my daughter and my wedding night. The experience will stay with me forever, and I have not been the same person since. No musical performer, or any type of performer, has ever had that much of an impact on me. Oh, and before and after the soundchecks, Bruce and the band walked right past where we were sitting. As he walked past me, I smiled at Bruce and he smiled back. For some reason, I've never forgotten that moment.
