Albee Tellone wrote: This show began with "Walking The Dog", which was not as unusual as you might think - Today when I listened to this show, I heard Clarence say "what it is" during the stops. We always called that jam tune "What It Is". Back then, "what it is" was what we then called "jive talk". What Americans euphemistically call EBONICS nowadays. Back then it was the latest street slang for "how's it going",etc. Predictably, he does it on both versions that I have. It wasn't so much the song "Walking the Dog" as it was a re-creation of the blues jam structure that we often used at the Upstage Club. "Walking the Dog" just had convenient lyrics that fit the structure. It started out as a sound check song and got to be the "warm-up" song for a long night's show. Something to get the band to loosen up. You may notice that we started with it on many occasions afterward. Bruce used old tunes from when we were in high school to stay loose and stretch out the show. Thats why you have songs from the 60s pop radio like "Twist and Shout" and "634-5789"

At some point Bruce calls me up on stage to play the baritone sax on E Street Shuffle. I started doing the "Albany Al" guest spots after the recording sessions for the song E STREET SHUFFLE on the weekend series of shows: 1973/09/28 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY
COLLEGE, HAMPDEN SYDNEY, VA ? 1973/09/29 WAYNESBURG COLLEGE, WAYNESBURG, PA and 1973/09/30 STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY, STONY BROOK,NY
and for the rest of the year.
