For some reason unknown to us, Mike Appel had us go on a Thursday morning in the middle of the 6 night run at Kenny's Castaways (11/5 - 11/10) to play at the prison. We had to go to the club in midtown Manhattan and move the equipment. Drive about an hour north to the prison, play for them and bring it all back for the night show at Kenny's. Talk about a captive audience ! Hah ! Those guys went completely crazy. They loved it. They were screaming and hollering but the guards were right on them. At one point the crowd opened up near the front and some little skinny black guy was playing a small "C Melody Saxophone". Bruce invited him up to jam and the crowd went nuts again ! He could only play in the key of C so Bruce and the boys did a blues jam just like the old Upstage Club stuff. It was memorable. There were white prisoner but I have never seen so many black men in one place before or since.

Jack McMahon wrote: Despite what you've read or written, I was the opening act (solo) for this run of dates. I just didn't get billing (Pat probably would have misspelled my name like he did Bruce's) at Kenny's (like I did when I opened for The NY Dolls) but played all 6 nights. I remember Bruce played some songs solo before bringing out the band. We chatted a little about both being from Jersey. When I told him I was from Nutley he said his girlfriend was from Clifton (the next town over). He definitely played The Circus sing and broke a string on the opening verse one night. The full band played "Blinded By The Light" and it was powerful. Bruce was pretty friendly and kindly commented that he really liked a song of mine entitled "On The Ledge". It blew my mind when just a couple of years later he was huge, even made the cover of Time and Newsweek magazines. Special memories, these!
