The Bruce Springsteen Timeline

February 19-20 2003

Bruce does two solo acoustic shows in Somerville, MA, benefitting DoubleTake magazine. The shows see an unusually talkative Bruce who even takes time to answer questions from the audience after his set. Unfortunately, the Q&A section is cut short the second night due to some particularly bad questions, but over the two nights he still shows some new sides of himself and reveals a lot of things about his song-writing and his career.

February 28 2003

The Rising Tour gets back on track in Duluth, GA, after the winter break. The next two weeks of shows take place in smaller arenas in unusual markets such as Richmond, where Bruce hasn't played since the early Seventies, and Atlantic City, where he has never played before.

March 20-28 2003

For the first time since 1985 Bruce and the E Street Band perform in Australia. The Down Under trip ends with a first-ever show in New Zealand.

April 2003

The tour is back in North America with several shows in Canada.

May-June 2003

An extensive stadium tour of Europe commences in Rotterdam and ends in Milan. Along the way, the band stops by Finland for the first time ever.

July-September 2003

The first stadium tour in North America since 1985. This part of the tour includes no less than 10 officially sold-out shows at Giants Stadium, NJ, and also sees Bruce and the band play baseball stadiums for the first time.

October 1-4 2003

Three shows at Shea Stadium in New York wrap up the Rising Tour. The 120-show tour has broken all records with a gross of approximately $120 million. As the tour neared its conclusion, fans have seen a more and more political Bruce in both song selection and stage raps, with each night featuring a "public service announcement" urging people to demand truth from their leaders, a reference to the Bush government and the war in Iraq.

November 11 2003

The Essential Bruce Springsteen is released. It includes a bonus disc with, for the most part, previously unreleased material.

November 18 2003

The Live in Barcelona DVD is released. This is the first complete Bruce Springsteen concert ever released in any format.

December 5-8 2003

The third almost-annual batch of holiday shows takes place at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park. Again Bruce and the guest artists are backed by the Max Weinberg 7. One of the shows is postponed one day due to a snow storm.
